Hello,
Throughout the day whenever I try to use my computer, I can hear my hard drive running, when I go to Task manager the application 'Updates from HP' is running. This wouldn't be a problem except I can't run any other program because everything else slows to a crawl. So I end Updates from HP so that I can use the computer. I can't find the specific program that is running this. I've gone to HP software updates under HP program and clicked never check for updates and also the notify me button. This program continues to run.

I searched for other posts on this subject but can't seem to find anything out there, if you could point me to another thread that would be helpful, I'm sure.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Everything listed there with a checkmark next to it is automatically loading during startup and running in the background. Other than the antivirus program and third-party firewall program(if one is being used), very few others, if any, need to load and run.

This site will assist you in managing the startup list and trimming it down. :up:

(Note: If you're using Windows ME or Windows XP, a window will appear during restart after you've edited the startup list. Ignore the message. Just place a checkmark in it and then click OK. This will prevent the window from reappearing again - unless you edit the startup list again.)

Thanks so much. I had done that to shut down some other programs from running but it didn't occur to me to look there for that particular problem. Thanks!

A lot of problems can be solved by keeping the startup list trimmed down as much as possible. :up:
