hi all,

my pc is running really slow. it gets stuck whenever a new program is launched. have video and audio stuttering. and have had to delete all games.

i have a desktop running windows xp. after much troubleshooting and searching online forums, i am trying this as the last recourse.

i have an unknown device under sound, video and game controllers. the device instance id is root\media\006.

there are no drivers installed for this device.

i had nvidia video card which i have removed. have also removed the modem card.

any help would be really appreciated.

We know nothing about your computer, so please do the following:

Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

What's the model name and model number of that computer?

What's the part/product number on it?

my comp is compaq presario SR5160IL.

the unknown device has a device instance id as 'ROOT\MEDIA\0006.

the unknown device is under 'sound, video and game controllers'

my 2 bits of knowledge - had logitech rumblepad installed which is now removed, but it still works when i connect to the comp. could the driver for logitech have taken over my system device?

have service pack 3 but have changed the cds key through regedit to 200. this makes my machine really fast.

also removed malware on the comp.

Here is the support site for the Compaq Presario SR5160IL (GG003AA) desktop.

It was introduced in May 2007 and sold in India.

It came with Free DOS and did not come with any Windows operating system.

It lists full driver support only for Windows Vista 32-bit for these primary devices:

Intel 82945GC (Intel GMA 950) graphics

Realtek ALC888 high definition audio

Realtek RTL8201E 10/100 Mbps ethernet

It came with only 512 MB of RAM, but you appear to have maxed it out with 2 GB(2048 MB) of RAM. :up:

It came with a 160 GB SATA hard drive, but you appear to have replaced it with a larger capacity one and set it up in H, I, J partitions.

got the comp as a gift from the organisation that i was working in. the IT head also gave an official xp professional loaded on the comp. have the original xp disk also.

even have 1 gb nvidia graphics card which i have removed to solve this problem.

The bottom part of the MGADiag log appears to be missing.

There's an older installation of Office that's not genuine so you should uninstall it.

There's an old registry hack that makes Windows XP believe it's running SP3 when it's actually running SP2.

The value of 200 is for SP2.

The value of 300 is for SP3.

I don't remember what registry key it's done in.

If that is the right thing I don't see why it would speed up a computer though.

I switched to sp2 through the regedit (it just makes the comp believe it's sp2) to get the audio working again.

chanced upon the machine becoming faster when I had switched.

One more thing, I can't uninstall this device as it says it is required for booting the system. also, it has no drivers installed

Since it's a System Builder's license feel free to continue if someone can help. But I would reformat and reinstall with SP3 and all subsequent updates. Then, if there's still a problem with audio I would troubleshoot that rather than using registry hacks that may cause other problems.
