I want to transfer my documents from my old computer to my new one but can't work out how to do it.

Current setup.
Both computers are connected to the router. (Not always, because we only have 2 ethernet cables, and need 1 for the internet.)
The file I want to transfer is shared.
The computers say the are connected to the router.
Both computers run Windows XP.

I don't know what other info you would need. I'm sure I could find out if you need me to.

(I bet I have missed a post or something that tells me how to do this, I always do.)

Hi and Welcome to TSG!
All you have to do if they are shared is go to my network places, which can be found in the control panel, and then find the folder / file and use it like a normal document.

Kind Regards

If you want to transfer files over the network, both computers have to be connected to the router at the same time. That means you'll at least need to buy or borrow another network cable.

I have 2 cables, I just have to disconnect it from the internet while I do anything, which does wear a bit thin sometimes. :D
Actually, we have 3, but we left one of them on our travels. It's found a relatives house, so we could get it back sometime.

Okay, I had a look at My Network Places. I cant find the folders...
Should the folders come up automatically or do I have to add them myself? They are not showing on the computer trying to access them and I'm not sure how to add them.

Hook up both computers to the router. Having the internet connected to the router does not matter in this case. Disable Windows firewall on both computers, then try looking in My Network Places. You should be able to see the other computer, and copy or move your files.

Hi,
Have you "shared" the folders, and have you enable file and printer sharing on the one you want to take th files from?

Kind Regards

In My Network Places click on 'view workgroup computers' in the left pane. With luck that should show both computers, but sometimes not until 15 minutes after the network is brought up. Double click on the icon for the other computer and you should see the shared folder(s).

The files are shared and the firewalls are (or will be) disabled.

I'll hook it up at somepoint and wait for a while at some point...
