Hello John,
I have a gateway 6520 gz laptop with IE6 and XPHE, I 'm on a network with two computers and use NETWORK MAGIC for the network, when I turn the laptop on it wants to display { the page cannot be displayed } instead of going online! Then NETWORK MAGIC pops-up and says {YOU ARE NOW CONNECTED} then I have to manually turn on IE6 button to go online, almost like the page { the page cannot be displayed } wants to come up first instead of the connection? TIA digthis:)

Hello.

I am not John. I hope that is OK with you.

Which service pack?

When did the problem begin?
Can you associate the onset of the problem to the addition or removal of hardware or software, to include an update to Windows or your antivirus program? Have you run a registry cleaner recently? I am NOT suggesting that you run a reg cleaner.

Go to the system configuration utility
To access the system configuration utility
Start > run
Delete the contents of the long, skinny, white box [ to the right of "open" ]
Type: msconfig
Left click "ok".

uncheck everything on the "startup tab.
OK
Restart
Does the problem occur?

If no, check everything associated with your AntiVirus & Firewall.
OK
Restart
Does the problem occur?

If no, check 1/2 of the remaining items.
OK
Restart
Does the problem occur?

If no, check 1/2 of the remaining items.

Restart
Does the problem occur?

Continue until you have 1 or 2 items left.

When the problem occurs, go back 1 group, add only 1/2 of that which you most recently added.

This is called clean boot troubleshooting.

The problem may be caused by something on the "services" tab, but I would start with the "startup" tab.

See these for detailed information about clean booting.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;310353
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 << for Vista, but applies equally to XP, and better written.

Hello,
Looks like IEXPLORE is the culprit under start-up I wonder if it would be best to try to update version 6.0.2900.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254 if possible or what I'd rather do is change it out for firefox and thunderbird! digthis:D

"Hey guys IEPLORE was the culprit ! should I do what I said in quick reply or try firefox and thunderbird my email is the lame outlook express!"

Assumptions:
The problem is with the Dell 530.
The problem is that IE opens to "page cannot be displayed", spontaneously, when your computer starts up.

If those assumptions are incorrect, please correct me.

If those assumptions are correct, my best guess is that IE is trying to connect to the internet before Network Magic has established a connection.

When our computer, with a broadband / always on connection starts, it tries to obtain an IP address. I think your computer is to allow IE to access the internet before Network Magic has obtained an IP address.

Is your modem always on?

Is your router always on?

Switching to FF will not change the situation.

Set your computer to "normal startup" in the system config utility.
Restart your computer.
Download 'Hijack This!
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis

*Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop or the folder of your choice.

Restart your computer.

*Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
*By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
*Click on Install.
*It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
*Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.

Please open HijackThis.
Click on Open Misc Tools Section
Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:

* List all minor sections(Full)
* List Empty Sections(Complete)

Click Generate StartupList Log.
Click Yes at the prompt.
It will open a text file. Please copy the entire contents of that page and paste it here.

Select & copy the text.

Return to this thread.
Paste the contents in a reply.

I do not suspect malware, digthis. I want to see a list of the programs that are in your startup & services.

Hello,
Modem and router are always on , the dell 530 is wired and does fine, the laptop is the one having the problems described above, If you're saying the dell 530 ie7 version 7.0.6001.18000 256 bit is the problem I will takk the steps you suggested to rid the laptop of this, wish I could just disable the ie's! digthis:eek:

Hello,
It seemed it started about the time I got the dell 530 desktop, That is when the gateway laptop started having problems with page display, like you said IE 6 was trying to connect to the internet before network magic could get a IP address, also about every other time I would restart the laptop it would display at the bottom DNS ERROR/WINDOWS/SYSTEM 32/XPSP2.{just noticed this was displaying at the bottom of the page on the laptop} I did as you said above about clean booting in services and start-up and narrowed it down to IE6 on the laptop in start-up, I'll go ahead and run hjkthis on the laptop and then if need be I'll do the dell 530 If you like, after the results of the laptop ok? digthis:eek:

Hello,
It seemed it started about the time I got the dell 530 desktop, That is when the gateway laptop started having problems with page display, like you said IE 6 was trying to connect to the internet before network magic could get a IP address, also about every other time I would restart the laptop it would display at the bottom DNS ERROR/WINDOWS/SYSTEM 32/XPSP2.{just noticed this was displaying at the bottom of the page on the laptop} I did as you said above about clean booting in services and start-up and narrowed it down to IE6 on the laptop in start-up, I'll go ahead and run hjkthis on the laptop and then if need be I'll do the dell 530 If you like, after the results of the laptop ok?"

The easiest, not necessarily the best, is to remove IE from the startup group,in the system config utility.
"OK"
"Yes"
Reboot.
Report the results.

OR

Plan B:
Right click the start button.
Left click "explore"
On the left, look for your C:, which should have a "-" to the left.
If there is not a "-" sign, left click the "+" sign.
Look for Documents and Settings, which should have a "-" to the left.
If there is not a "-" sign, left click the "+" sign.
Look for "owner".
If there is not a "-" sign, left click the "+" sign.
Look for "start menu".
If there is not a "-" sign, left click the "+" sign.
Look for "programs ".
If there is not a "-" sign, left click the "+" sign.
Look for "startup ".
If there is not a "-" sign, left click the "+" sign.

Still on the left, left click on "startup".
Now, on the right, look for a shortcut to IE.
RIGHT click on it.
Left click "cut".
Minimize Windows Explorer.
You should be at your desktop.
Right click a blank spot.
left click "paste"

Re-start your computer.

Report the results.
