I recently got this error message when re-booting:

" While initializing device NDIS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. "

This was after I installed a new motherboard and CPU ( P4 2.66 MHZ ).

This happened after I used " Spy Bot Search and Destroy ".

I was then only able to go into " Safe Mode ". From there I stumbled around until I came to Norton Unerase Wizard.

I restored everything that had "NDIS" in it. This seemed to work because I just booted up fine.

****MY question is: What did I delete that was essential to booting Windows?

How can I prevent myself from harming my PC? I thought I was helping my PC by removing spyware. Did I go overboard and remove too much ?

Thank goodness for Norton !!

You all have solved every PC problem I have had so far ; batting 100 ...:)

This looks like the correct diagnosis for my porblem.

However I feel that Microsoft may not support me because all the hardware on my PC is new: case, power, HD's, motherboard, CPU, ect.

The only thing original is the OS ( WIN 98 ). This OS came with an old Gateway PC. The serial number has " OEM " in it ( original equipment manufacturer ). The Microsoft support website said to contact the original manufacturer, yet nothing is original on my PC.

*** Is there any help for support out there for this problem ? ***

I thought Candy's link provided patches for the problem.
M$ wasn't written for your old (or new) configuration, so that should not be an issue.

I would think that M$ would have a no cost to you patch or hot fix for this problem.

As you can see, the problem was caused by nothing you did other than upgrading your hardware.

Yes your right. Somehow the hotfix for this problem was installed
without me noticing it.

After research, I found it in C> windows > temp
It was named after the article number it refered to.

Thanks folks. I feel like such an compnovice .

Consider this "SOLVED "...until next time. Thanks again
