Hey us,
Well the title is a little wrong, as I can't think of a way to put it.

Well i'm currently fixing a computer, and the owners arn't very computer literate.
And they only have 2 20gb HDDs.
Now what I want to do is find the setting (im pretty sure there is one) to set it to automatically install things to the drive which doesn't have windows installed on it (for eg...when you go through installations, the default directory is C:/Program Files/<name of programme>.......and i don't want it to be....This is because I intend to put all the programmes on the external HDD to stop the PC from slowing down, as it is only 1GHz and when I took it in, it was running very slow from 1 HDD.
Any help, comments, advice anything....would be appreciated.
Kind Regards
Anthony

Installing applications to a separate hard disk won't change any slowdown they cause.

Hi John,
I know it is a long shot, but the idea was to minimize HDD activity, as it used to be working overtime even when it was idle, or in standby etc.
But im not hoping for any miracles. :)

Kind Regards

I agree with JW here and I would look at startup first, increase the ram etc...but here is how to do it:
1. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
2. Find ProgramFilesDir whose default should be C:\Program Files
3. Change this to whatever directory you wish. I changed it to D:\Program Files for example.

Remember you have to reboot for your changes to show.

Hi Rich,
Thanks for that.
I have actually done a clean installation, and like I said in my previous post it's worth a shot.
They have said that if it doesn't work this time, then they'll look at having me upgrade some of the hardware.

But thanks for the help and advice guys, much appreciated.

Kind Regards
Anthony
