Solved: Speca~1.dat error

Ok...Here is what is going on.

I had upgarded my Internet Explorer to IE 7 and my computer started running slow, so I decided to Restore the computer to reinstate the IE 6. I also ran a scan disc. I am now getting a error message that reads:

C:\windows\Speca~1.dat Data file does not exist.

The first time I noticed it was when the AVG ran a scan. But then later when I walked past the computer it was just sitting there on the screen. Just seems to pop up.

I tried to undo the restoration and a message came up that said that it could not be restored back. So I tried restoring to another earlier point and again got a message saying that it could not be restored to that point. Now I'm really confused.

I have run Housecall and one cookie showed up, which I had removed, it was cookie_revsci and Adware_whenu showed up. I had Housecall clean that. I also ran Ewido and only came up with one trackingcookie.com, removed that.

Kaspersky Online Scan came up with this....I've never seen a scan that says that things are locked...is this ok??

I'm also putting a HiJackthis log beneath the Kaspersky Scan for you to look at.

I've got my compuer up and running all by my little lonesome.....no help from security or anyone here for some reason. Not sure why. Has this site grown that much that I couldn't get an answer from 2 different posts?? :confused:

basically you have wrecked it by doing a system restore instead of uninstalling IE7

I don't know away out of it except a reinstall of windows

What do you mean I 'wrecked it"? Internet Explorer 7 was not showin gup in Add/remove for me to remove it that way, so I figured a restore would at least get me back to working. I was hanging up on everything. And I waited and waited for a response on my thread, but didn't get one. What is one to do?

using a system restore doesn't remove IE7 completely & there are warnings on the MS site about that

IT does ALWAYS show in add/remove programs as windows internet explorer 7

I know no way to get rid of that error message except reinstall windows from scratch

Well I did look and didn't see it....anyway....that error message has resolved itself. Not showing up anymore. I had done several minor things, so maybe one of them worked. But now I'm having another problem, which I have posted a new thread for. If you have time to look at it, that would be great. If not, I understand. Question...What do you think about a WIndows XP Repair instead of a reinstall?
