it’s been a long while since I’ve had any problems with my computer. However, despite how careful I’ve tried to be, my housemates also use my computer and as a result I got some viruses and spyware and such. The problem comes when one of my housemate’s friend decided to “fix” my computer without asking me. Truth be told, I don’t trust the guy despite his self proclaimed “computer wizard” status.

Now a few strange problems have come up. IExplorer is constantly running in my processes even though I never use it (I use Mozilla Firefox for security), and he didn’t know what Kaspersky was and did something to it so it’s impossible to delete from my programs list, it just claims “this action is only valid for programs that are currently installed” but when I tried to install any other AntiVirus program besides Symantec it tells me Kaspersky must be removed first. Quite the endless loop. And, for some reason, the search function in Explorer doesn’t work anymore, the annoying little animated “search buddy” appears but no text boxes. Not to mention my computer is just acting strange all around now, sluggish, random termination of programs, that sort of thing.

I am on a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP Media Center Edition. I have run Ad-aware SE, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Symantec AntiVirus (version 10.1.5.5000) and have found nothing aside from some minor tracking cookies.

here’s my HJT log file:

I’m completely inept when it comes to the inner workings of computers, does anything appear to be wrong? if there’s any more information you need me to supply I would be more than willing, I just want to know what’s causing my computer to act so frustratingly.

Hi, fifrenzy3 :)

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [litemailactivejugs] "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ThisMealLiteMail\Bits 64.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [hope this] "C:\DOCUME~1\ALEXKL~1\APPLIC~1\GLUEHE~1\mapi team show.exe"

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close Hijackthis.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Alex Klanke\Application Data\Gluehecksoft\
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Thismeallitemail\

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Post a fresh Hijackthis log and let me know how is the computer doing.

as for my computer's performance, it's deffinitely running smoother now that IExplorer isn't constantly running on several processes in task manager that won't terminate. Thank you! I already notice a difference.

the only thing I still notice that irritates me a little is Kaspersky Internet Security 6 still shows up on my programs list on the control panel and still won't be removed, and the search function in explorer sill won't work so I can't do a hard drive scan to see what files are scattered about. I tried reinstalling and then doing a clean uninstall but that doesn't work either. it wouldn't be a problem except like I said I can't install any other anti virus programs because they require Kaspersky to be gone. but then, maybe I don't even need anything more than the basic Symantec AV I have. do you have any take on this? i have no idea if it's anything you can help me with, it's probably not even viral in nature, but I thought I'd ask.

thanks so much for your time, this isn't the first time you guys have saved me from a lot of frustration and damage!

Hi, fifrenzy3 :)

To remove Kaspersky follow these steps:
  1. Download the archive KisKav6Remove.zip and extract its contents, the file KisKav6Remove.exe, to the desktop.
  2. Restart your PC in Safe Mode.
  3. Once in Safe mode, double click on the KisKav6Remove.exe file on the desktop and follow the prompts
  4. Restart your PC

Concerning Search, lets first check for policies in the registry. Download the enclosed folder and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a batch file. Double click on the Policies.bat file. A new document will be produced. Post the contents of this document in your next reply.

Hi, fifrenzy3 :)

There are no restrictions in the computer. Lets try reinstalling the feature:

Reinstall the Search Companion Files
  1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
  4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.

NOTE: You may need your Windows XP Installation CD to finish installing Search Companion.

Keep me posted.

yeah, the windows installation disc was needed. sadly, I ordered my computer with the operating system and everything already installed, and if they sent me the discs with it I have no idea what happened to them. I guess that kinda restricts what else can be done, eh?

aside from that though my computer is running fine thanks to your superb guidance!

Hi, fifrenzy3 :)

Sometimes the installation files are saved in the hard drive.

Please download FileFind from Atribune.
Unzip the file and save it to your desktop.

To run FileFind, please do the following:
  • Click on FileFind.exe
  • In the box labeled "Directory"
    • Enter: C:\
  • In the box labeled "File"
    • Enter: Explorer.EX_ (As yoou can see ends with an underscore)
  • Now click on the "Search" button
  • Once the utility has found the files click on "Export"
  • A Notepad will open up. Please copy the entire contents of the Notepad and paste them here.
  • NOTE: The notepad is saved on your C:\ drive as "Export.txt"

sorry it took me so long to reply, I've been out of town.

anyway, I used the file search program. this is all there was on the export.txt file:

C:\i386\EXPLORER.EX_ - 359533 Bytes

is this what we were looking for?

Whenever a Windows Installation CD is requested, redirect the installation Wizard (Browse) to the C:\i386 folder. The C:\i386 folder represents the Windows Installation CD. So go ahead and reinstall the Search companion as indicated above.

I tried that and the window came up that indicated it was installing. when the progress bar was done the window closed, but the search function is still sans-textboxes. I rebooted and tried again, and up sauntered that goofy yellow dog.... but still no text fields or buttons or really anything at all aside from the animated companion thing and the blue background.

is there anything else I can try at this point?

Hi, fifrenzy3 :)

Download the enclosed file. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a folder containing a Batch file, Query.bat . Once extracted double click on Query.bat and post the report it creates.

Hi, fifrenzy3 :)

Please create a Restore point:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "Before JScriptFix", then click Create.

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.

Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot preform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry
  1. Go Here and download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  3. Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  4. Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  6. Press OK
  7. Press YES to create the folder.
Registry Modifications

Download the enclosed file. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a folder containing a Registry Entries file, jscriptFix.reg . Once extracted, open the folder and double click on the jscriptFix.reg file and select Yes when prompted to merge it into the registry.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then click OK.
3. Click OK.
4. Click Start, and then click Run.
5. In the Open box, type regsvr32 vbscript.dll, and then click OK.
6. Click OK.

Restart the computer and test.

Keep me posted.

hmm this brings another problem to my attention. I tried opening system restore once, nothing happened. the hourglass flashed for a second but nothing went. a few minutes later I tried again. this time a white box came up with nothing displayed. I tried again and the cycle repeats. I tried rebooting and waiting a while and still the same. I'm guessing it may be unwise to continue without a restore point though...

Could be for the same issue. As an alternative, backup your registry as follows:
  • Go to Start->Run, Type Regedit.exe and click Ok.
  • The Registry Editor will be displayed.
  • Click on My Computer in the Editor to highlight it.
  • Select Registry from the Menu, then Export
  • Name the export Backup
  • Save it on C:\

You now have a backup of your registry on C:\ (C:\Backup.reg).

Merge the file and restart the coputer.

Hi, fifrenzy3. :)

Congratulations.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Create a Restore point:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Please use the thread's Tools and mark this thread as "Solved".

Best wishes!
