Hello all, unfortunately my daughter received a kitten that proceeded to knock a glass of water all over the keyboard of our computer. After trying another keyboard and another mouse which also quit working, I'm here looking for some help. It does boot up o.k. but once you get there you can't do anything because of the inoperable mouse. The keyboard seems to work but, the action of it is really sloooooooow. I have booted into the safe mode several times and have tried some different modes but, about all I've found out is that there is a problem with the mouse,............no kidding!!
I have a feeling that whatever the two peripherals plug into has some problems. I haven't opened up the case yet but, I'm just about ready to and see if there is something obvious there.
Does anyone have any ideas on what my next move should be? Right now I'll try anything as I haven't been able to get online for 3 or 4 days. Thanx for any help that anyone can give, Toni.

You, could try this. although only with a keyboard it may take a little trial and error to get there. Should be able to do it with just a keyboard though.

Right click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the Performance Tab.
Under Advanced Settings, click Graphics which displays the following window:
Advanced Graphics Settings:
“These settings control how Windows uses your Graphics Hardware. They can help you trouble-shoot display-related problems”.

It then displays a ‘Hardware Acceleration’ scale:
[None . . . . Full] and a movable pointer

Full:
All accelerator functions. Use this setting if your computer has no problems.

One stop left of Full:
Most accelerator functions. Use this setting to correct PROBLEMS WITH
THE MOUSE POINTER. BINGO!!!

Two stops left of full:
Basic accelerator functions. Use this setting ................etc. etc.

None:
No accelerator functions. Use this setting ....................etc.[/color]
Yes, 'One stop left of Full' does slow screen activity down a little but it is a joy compared to the aggravation of re-booting and losing what one has been working on umpteen times in a session. What a relief to be able to confidently drag the mouse pointer across the screen again - sometimes just touching the mouse used to freeze the computer

are these (mouse and / or keyboard ) USB devices - are the plugs retangular or round ?

was the PC on when wet ?

did you let the device dry out completely

do they have batteries installed in keyboard and /or mouse

The water only got onto the keyboard itself. The computer was definitely on. I can't say for sure what they did right after it happened as I was at work. But it is dry now. They are round plugs and are plugged into the back of the computer. I'm certain they are not USB devices. And no there are no batteries installed. Toni.

you may have damaged the PS2 ports - or the keyboard

you could try a USB keyboard - if you can borrow one from someone

I would not use the same keyboard, just because its dry does not mean that it did not create a short somewhere in the keyboard.

Now when you say
"After trying another keyboard and another mouse which also quit working"

what exactly do you mean by this?
Are they a know pair to be working fine or do they have issues as well? really need to have a keyboard and mouse that you know works to go any further.

And of coarse the other option is you can always go USB as mentiond

I guess that was a bad choice of words. The ones I'm trying to use right now were a working keyboard and mouse when they were unhooked. Really the mouse shouldn't have been affected as it didn't get wet during the deluge. It was only after the keyboard got wet that the mouse started acting up........ I think I will try to pickup a USB mouse and see what that will net me.

Well, if you were plugging and unplugging the PS/2 devices in with power on, you could have easily toasted the PS/2 ports. OTOH, dumping water on the keyboard shouldn't have killed them.

Being a bit sloppy and a smoker my keyboards (I have a few) quickly become a mess. I just spay them with Mr. Clean and scrub them with a brush in the shower. The shower does a nice job of getting all the gunk out. I let it dry then, upside down, while using another. I've been doing this for years.

I can't believe it....it works again!!! I sat down this morning and figured I'd give it another shot and I remembered something about using F-10 for some configuration thing and all I did was to select default restoration and this stupid piece of plastic took right off just like nothing had happened!!! Boy, these things can be frustrating at times.
I guess all that left is to figure out whether to try to use the old keyboard or to go out and buy another one. I hate to because that one was only a couple years old. It would seem that a few days of drying should do the trick.
One thing that I learned was not to plug and unplug your mouse and keyboard with power on. It only recognizes them on a bootup it seems....
Anyways thanks for the support in this matter.....and by the way, we have a new rule at our house, no more drinks around the keyboard. I guess we will keep the cat for now at least. Until the next disaster anyways.
Regards, Toni.

I'd get rid of the cat. It will be after your mouse again.
