Solved: Slow New Laptop

1411 Views 18 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  TheShooter93
I find my new Asus K750JN laptop with windows 8.1 quite slow and I wonder if this is due to OS configuration. The specs: Intel i7-4700HQ, 2.4GHz, 4 Cores, 8 Logical Processors, 750GB HDD, 8GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 840M

The only program running in the Task Manager is “Nvidia GeForce Experience Backend” which I don’t know yet what is for and I have deleted almost all Metro Apps since I have no use for them. What I mean by slow is that when I click to open a program like the file explorer or any other program it hesitates for a few seconds before the program opens

In comparison, my 7 years old Dell Inspiron with Intel Core Duo T7200 2.0GHz, 140GB HDD, 2GB RAM and Vista Home, when I click the file explorer or any other program they come on instantly

Perhaps this is a characteristic of windows 8.1 since it’s a much bigger OS?

I’m looking if there are any configuration tips to maximize the speed / efficiency of this laptop

Are all of the Windows updates installed?

The OS just may be trying to down load them if you have not installed them ALL!
Yes Dave I do all the updates as they come, today I had another 1.1GB of them

From what I read win 8.1 is the same OS for tablets and PC's and perhaps that is the reason she is slow?
Remember that there are two types of Windows tablets.
The Surface RT is a very limited type as the Surface Pro uses the same version on any PC.

Do you have the RT or the Pro version?
I have Microsoft Windows 8.1 Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600, I know its not the Pro but is this the RT?
Not sure what AV you are using but I removed McAfee, from my new Acer laptop and installed AVG free, and it made a huge difference in performance!!
Tony
I removed McAfee too and right now I dont have any AV program. Waiting to configure windows first and after I may install AVG. I have never liked any AV programs and in the last 7-8 with Vista in my old laptop I had no AV and never had any problems. Perhaps I was lucky?
I would appreciate if you let me know of your progress in speeding up your computer( what you uninstall and the results) and I will do the with you! all the crap they pre-load on these machines is really aggravating!!
Thanks
Tony
Dont know very much about win 8.1 yet but besides the AV I also right clicked on each tile in the start screen and delete them all (kept only help tips, camera, and weather)
With that hardware you should have no problem with performance, especially given that it's a new computer.

As for blaming Windows 8.1, it is actually less resource hungry than Windows 7. Although I understand wanting to blame Windows 8/8.1 for things. ;)

Please see the following.

Given that you don't have an antivirus program on your machine, I highly recommend you get one.

No Antivirus Program Installed
  • Please download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated.
  • New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software. Three good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are avast! Free Antivirus and Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus and Microsoft Security Essentials.
  • You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

MsConfig
  • Press and hold the Windows button + R on your keyboard.
  • In the Run box, type MSCONFIG and hit Enter.
  • Click the "Startup" tab.
  • Write down only the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.
  • If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.
  • Submit those names here in a vertical list.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Task Manager - Resource Usage
  • Right-click the Taskbar and choose Start Task Manager.
  • Click the Performance tab and let your computer run for a few minutes as you normally would.
  • Take a screenshot of this windows and include it in your next reply.

Windows 8 and 8.a1 uses Defender which is MSE.

I have read articles on both sides as to whether or not Windows Defender is sufficient as an anti-virus program.

Personally I have found it to work sufficiently, but I have friends/colleagues who disagree.

In any event, remove any other AV product if you choose to use Defender, and disable Defender if you choose to use any other AV product.

BTW, thank you for the catch as I (obviously) did fail to mention that.

You will need to start your own thread as we cannot help two people effectively in one thread.

Once you have done this feel free to send me a private message with a link to your new thread.

Thank you Cody for the help

I'm happy to learn that 8.1 is less resource hungry than 7. I attached here an image from the performance tab from the Task Manager plus another image for my start-ups also from the Task Manager. Msconfig does not have anything on the start-up tab, it says to use the Task Manager.

For your info, the ps_timer.exe program in my start-up image is a utility from Germany I use for many years to listen / record songs from various radio stations

I will take care of the AV program soon

Sorry about the outdated MSConfig instructions -- Microsoft changed the location of this list as of Windows 8.

According to the screenshots you gave me, your CPU is using only 1% of its total capacity and only 22% of its memory.

Was your computer running slowly when you provided these screenshots?
I only have my Asus K750JN laptop with windows 8.1 for a week now and I try to learn both at the same time. I think the main problem is the touchpad. As I said in my 1st post "when I click" it means perhaps I don't click properly and there is a time lag between the click and the opening of the program because of the touchpad.

When I sent the images the system looks like its working better but I'm sure is not of windows 8.1 but rather with the touchpad settings. The sensitivity setting of the touchpad does not work properly because no matter where I set it the results are the same.

So now that I know the OS works ok, I will concentrate to find a solution for the touchpad perhaps by checking to see if I have the latest driver version

Thank you for your time
If the only issue seems to be "lag" with the touchpad, then yes, it may be a driver issue or physical defect with the touchpad.

Try using a mouse on this computer and see if the "lag" continues.
