Im using a Netgear DG638 modem/router with the family PC downstairs, and connecting to my PC upstairs via Ethernet Crossover Cable (RJ45 or whatever its called). Now my PC was receiving the internet connection with no problems. I was playing happily on WoW when im called downstairs and i find that the family PC can't access the internet. Now i dont know why this might be (other than me stealing all the bandwidth..) but i check the router connections, and its fine, since mine is working upstairs. But no matter what website i try, i get a "page could no be displayed" error. Now what could possibly be causing this? My setup goes like this:

ISP > Router ----[usb to family PC]
............|.....................................
My PC via Ethernet

I'm using tiscali 2mb broadband. Checked network connections and its shown as connected but i can't seem to get the pc downstairs to connect..

..any advice?

apologies if this is in teh wrong section (again!) but i figured its a networking problem, as the hardware appears fine.

cheers!

right let me explain this properly.

The router is a USB modem/router. It has ALWAYS been connected to the downstairs PC by USB CABLE, and has worked flawlessly for months.
Recently i connected my PC to the router via it's Ethernet port. I got the internet in my bedroom, yay!
Downstairs, the PC is unable to access the internet. It gives us teh "page cannot be displayed" error. I can access the router CP but dont know what help that would give.
Upstairs, i can use the net, play WoW, download crap or do whatever i want.

I just want to know what might cause the computer downstairs to lose its internet connection, even though the modem/router is working.

hopefully thats better explained it

You can only connect via one connection type, not both would be my assumption. How many ports are on this router? If only one ethernet, then get an inexpensice 5 port switch and connect the switch to the modem/router and each PC to the switch via ethernet.

If you disconnect your machine and restart the router, will the downstairs machine connect properly?

Since it appears that it should function, let's start looking at the machine that doesn't connect. Are you SURE the cable is good? How about doing this?

For 98 or ME, Start, Run, COMMAND to open a command prompt:
--- or ---
For 2K or XP, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

will do when i get home.

at the moment we have to use a GHASTLY usb modem, which means my own pc has no internet connection. i was trying to reconfigure the router last night but as our ISP doesnt provide us with the details we need other than through its website, we need to be on the internet to set up the router.. which we cant do.

Still, we're going to have a gander at it tonight and see what we can do. I was just posting this topic to see if anyone had a solid idea of what it was.

Im 100% positive the cable is good. I could connect to the routers control panel, my pc upstairs could connect to the net, so im 100% sure its not a connection fault in terms of wires

cheers for the help so far

You didn't see it becasue it would have been on the Netgear International Site. I have the DG631 and you can run thru the setup wizard which is simply the best thing to do

That setup wizard gave me nothing but trouble when we first installed ours. i fund it better to just plug it in, let windows pick up the usb device, then install the drivers. worked for me first time doing that. following the instructions on that disc gave me a headache...

USB port option allows for simultaneous Ethernet and USB connectivity
The router has one ethernet port and one usb port. There's no point in having the router if it can only connect to one PC, right? Besides which, i got it working again last night. Its a bandwidth issue, it appears. Apparantly my PC is hogging the 2mb bandwidth, which is preventing the other computer from accessing the net at any decent speed.

The router is not at fault, and yes, it does work through USB, as it is a USB modem/router.

The modem is not also a router if it only has one ethernet port. If you want to connect multiple computers to this connection you need to connect the ethernet port on the modem to the WAN port on the router. Then you connect the other computers either wirelessly or with ethernet cables.

Netgear Combo Modem/routers have one ethernet and one USB port. The OP needs a switch attached to the unti to get more machines up and running.

this problem only happens at around 8-9pm. beforehand it seems the internet is fine, lthough a little laggy. quite simply a matter of bandwidth. we're experiencing very few problems at the moment, however i can guarantee that at around 9pm gmt it will go belly up. simply put, i reckon our ISP is cutting our bandwidth down at these times. its not a hardware fault or anything like that.

cheers for the help so far but it appears the problem lies with my ISP.
