I have been trying to reinstall IE6 to try to deal with the problem of corrupted files which the computer was unable to repair itself. Whatever I try, 6 files:-
atl.dll, proctexe.ocx, dxtrans.dll, dxtmsft.dll, thumbvw.dll and tdc.ocx
keep reappearing with the message "the file may not have been installed or it has been corrupted". All 6 files are definitely in C:\Windows\System. I have tried replacing them with alternatives downloaded from http://www.dlldump.com and always with the same result and the same failure message.

What do I try next, please? My thanks in advance for any help provided.

Hi try to register each dll file.
Start>run>type cmd or command.
Type regsvr32+dll file >ok>enter..repeat for each file.
You may need to go into Window Explorer first and find each dll file..R/click and rename Old.
Then reregister each dll file.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I'm becoming a wee(!) bit confused regarding the syntax of what you suggest as it relates to areas of knowledge with which I am unfamiliar. Do I type Command followed by OK? This takes me into MS-Dos mode which I am assuming is incorrect so I have input commands into Run of which the following is an example:-
regsvr32 \windows\system\atl.dll
The result has been the same in each of the 6 cases -
LoadLibrary("\windows\system\atl.dll") failed. GetLastError returns 0x0000001f. Is this the point at which the second part of your suggestions come into play? Presumably, I need to change atl.dll to atl.old? If so, which file name do I use to re-try registering?

Thank you for your help and patience with a rather old dog trying hard to learn new tricks.

Hi Start>run>type>command..at Ms- Dos prompt.type.
regsvr32 atl.dll >ok>enter..repeat for all dll files.
You may need to go to Windows Explorer FIRST locate dll file...rename old dll.
Right click dll file rename Old.
Then use dll file you d/loaded to install new..then register dll files.

If all else falls try IE fix..which will reinstall all IE core files.

Hello again. I'm afraid I've tried both methods and the 6 files in question are met with the same error messages as before and the Internet Explorer Repair Tool continues to highlight them as corrupted or not installed. Presumably, at least, we know they can't be corrupted as they are all fresh downloads so where do I go from here?

Again, many thanks for your interest.

I followed the basic instructions contained in this article in relation to the atl.dll file and the other 5 seem to have fallen into place as a consequence. I don't pretend to understand why that should be so but I am grateful to blues_harp28 for making me think a bit harder and to Google for finding what I hope will prove to be the final answer.
