Can anyone give me directions on how to run a registry repair in Windows 2000 please.

In the 9x based system you could boot into dos mode and do it with scanreg /opt /fix but I don't know if 2000 will do that and as I'm over 100 mile away from our member I need to know what advice to give her.

Thanks

Thanks Rache, I thought before I recommended the program to our member I would have a look at it myself so I downloaded it but it wouldn't install, just stopped responding each time I tried to install.

If I have that trouble with it I'm not brave enough to recommend it to the lady concerned.

Any other suggestions please?

Thanks Rache, I don't think I have any installer problem as other programs install without any hassles, it just that my computer doesn't seem to like that one.

I have forwarded your recommendation on to the lady concerned.

Rache, as an update I have retried to install AWC and it has installed OK. The program does seem to hang a bit, have you noticed that before?

It also found a lot of problems which I didn't think I had, would they be genuine or false positives.

Your comments appreciated.

Thanks Blues, I know very little about Windows 2000 so could you please tell me how one would get the ERD, can it be created in the system itself.

Appreciate that all members of our group are chronologically endowed so a lot are not very computer literate and as I'm over 100 mile away it makes it a bit awkward.

The problems that she has been having is slowness, freezing and all the other signs of malware infections but she has had so many scanning program, registry cleaners etc installed that I think think has been a lot of the problem. I have got her to uninstall a lot of them but I have the feeling that her registry may have been corrupted.

Her main defenses now are AVG, Spyware Doctor and Spyware Blaster with periodic scans with the Trend Online Anti Virus Scan.

Hi ERD has to be created on a working system.
Programs>accessories>system tools..4 blank floppy disks needed.
ERD only really needed if system will not Boot.
Before uninstalling Reg cleaners..always good to use their backup to reset registry to before you used the cleaner or some system files could be gone for ggod.
Does Trend online scan show any cause for concern?
Spybot..Ad-Aware links below..d/load check for updates.
Scan..remove all that Ad-Aware finds ..All entries in Red in Spybot.

Next move would be for them to sign up to this site..and post a Hjt log and let log experts take a look. ;)

Thanks Again Blues,

This is part of an email I got a while ago: " Doesn't seem to be any change at all Joe... it still freezes frequently. In fact nothing would work when I came out here just now. I have to a CTRL ALT and DEL each time. Simply bringing up Task Manager then trying to get the resulting 'box' unfrozen to get it to actually work, makes the lot start up again!."

I have told her to contact one of our ' Buddies ' that live close to her so hopefully he may be able to assist her.

I will pass your suggestions on and get back here in due course to let you people know how things went.

Bedtime here now mate.

Cya

It seems that the biggest causes of the problems are that when she got the ' New ' computer 6 years ago it was sold with an obsolete motherboard that won't run RAM above the speed of 100. It is a P4 1.6 GB with a 4o GB HD, fitted with 512 MB of SDRAM of which the computer is only recognising 384 MB

Recently one of her 'friends' done some work on it, supposedly on the Video Card where he cut and joined wires etc trying to fix that, also added 2 x 64 MB RAM which I feel is causing all the problems now.

She had every program on it with the exception of the Quit Smoking Campain but I have got her to remove a lot of those and now its running a bit better but as she is over 100 mile away from me she will have to get someone to have a look at it for her.

I think that you people have done about all you can for me in this instance so I intended to close this one and say thank you for you help.
