I am planing on buying an external hard disk yust for downloading purpouses.
I am intending to connect it on an old and fanless computer that will only be running a usb version of windows xp and a torrent program. My dilema is that i am not 100% sure that the 500Gb external disk will be recodnised on that old rig? If anyone has tried something similar or if anyone has any experience on this subject please help!!
Don't wanna buy a 500Gb disk for nothing:D

Something that old would most likely have only usb 1.1 rather than usb 2.0. It will be next to useless with the slower usb ports.

Note you could install a usb 2.0/Firewire card if you have an unused pci slot.

Yes,yes! A USB 2.0 PCI card is already a part of the plan, no worries there. But i am not sure if the card is the only cindition, for the externat HD to funcion properly. I mean, can the old system itself present any problems?

As long as you are using win XP with at least sp1 or win2k with at least sp3, then the os will recognize the drive. Since it is connected to a usb controller card, you will not have a system bios limitation so you should be OK as long as your os is of at least the sp I posted.
