Hello,

I have a problem with my home network. I just bought a new laptop (dell 700m) with intergrated wireless technology. I also have a desktop and it is "wired" to a speedstream modem and the modem is connected to a D-link (wireless router). I can get both to connect to the internet and share files but I cant get connected under a secured connection. My virus software always detects some unknow cpu on my connection. How can I secur this connection?

Thank You

It would be more usual to wire the desktop to the router ; your configuration seems unusal.
It is more usual:

internet --> modem --> wireless router --> all PCs (wired and wireless) off router

Or is the Speedstream a combined modem/router?
What do you mean by secured connection?
Is it the wireless connection you wish to secure?

More details would help, for example:
- modem, router makes/models
- OSs
- Virus software that claims unknown CPU present.

My modem is a Speedstream 5100 wich is connected to a D-link (Di-524) wireless router. My desktop is "wired" to the router and my notebook connects the the router via wireless. The OS on both systems is XP home and the virus sofware on both is Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2005.

Here are the problems that I have.
1). My virus software almost always detects some unknown computer connected to my wi-fi.
2) When my laptop is detecting availible wi-fi connections in range, I only can connect to one called "default" and it is unsecure.

I think any of my neighbors can connect to my connection.

Anyways, I am very confused. Can you help?

I found out what it was. My router wasn't setup right for the wireless connection.

Thanks
