Hi,

my computer is playing up on start up. Up until recently I would turn on the power at the wall (the mains) then press the power button on the computer tower and everything would start up OK. However, recently when I turn the power on at the mains the tower turns itself on, lights flicker, it whirs for a few seconds then goes off ? I then have to press the power button again and then it sounds like it is spinning faster and faster and faster and it is possibly going to explode but nothing happens - the monitor doesn't come on. After a few attempts at swithching it on and off it will eventually start up properly. It is a Dell Dimension and a couple of years old.

Hi,

What model Dell Dimension and what BIOS version.

Check the BIOS settings. re power

There is a section regarding what the computer does on restoration of power. following a power failure.

Power failure could be seen as as little as the removal of the mains power plug from the wal.

If you are using a power strip and or runing off the power to the computer at a wall socket.

Then when you switch this on, the computer may depending on the setting in BIOS start up without you pressing ON.

As it will see power has been restored.

The noise I hear is the fan running at 100%. The PC starts up and on random occasions a few seconds after start up the fan goes into overdrive and then the PC stays on but I can't get to anything. Sometimes it will happen again when I try again and sometimes it will work normally. The fan runs normally at all other times. I have searched for info on this and it does seem to be a common Dell problem but I have yet to find a solution. I have upgraded BIOS.
