When I try to install updates from Microsoft's site I get an error saying "Updates were not successfully installed." This happens during both manual and automatic updating. I search google.com high and low and cannot find a fix that works. This is the specific error from the WindowsUpdate.log

FATAL: Error: 0x80070005. wuauclt handler: failed to spawn COM server
FATAL: 0x80070005: ERROR: Remote update handler container process created (PID: 1656), but exited before signaling event

Please help, thank you.

Looks like a very unfamiliar error message to me. I would tell you to contact Microsoft but my instincts tell me that either 1) you won't be able to find the support you need from their site, 2) they will never get back to you, or 3) they'll give you a ridiculous solution that will just waste your time, leaving you wondering just how that person landed a job at Microsoft with only an elementary education involving computers.

Check firewall settings or disable firewall once you get to microsoft and re-enable after download and install.

A couple of things that can be blocking the installs:

1. Spyware/Adware/Trojan/Worm infections preventing updates.
2. Unlicensed/illegal copy of the operating system ( you would usually get a warning for this reason).
3. You are not installing the updates from a user account with administrative privileges.

Try just downloading/installing one update at a time. You might even have to manually download the update file instead of using the update sites.

Thanks for the replies. There is no spyware or viruses on the machine. It is a legal copy of Server 2000. I am logged on as the administrator. Nothing has been changed on the firewall since the last patch session. This problem is effecting only three of our many servers. Any other ideas?

When you get to MS, instead of check for updates, use the admin options on the left, from there try downloading and saving updates for manual install later.

Fixed:

One other possibility is that the default DCOM access permissions on the machine have somehow become corrupted. This can sometimes happen if the DCOMCnfg tool is used to view or edit the default access permission ACLs.

You can check this by doing the following:

1. launch regedit.exe
2. Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Ole
3. Look for the value "DefaultAccessPermission" (NOT DefaultLaunchPermission)

If this value exists, it is possible that the value has been corrupted or are incorrect. If you don't have the need for specific default permissions, you can restore the original permissions on the machine by deleting this value (do not delete the entire reg key, just that one value.)
