I wanted to purchase a new lcd tv. I'm looking at the Sony Bravia 46". Looks like I can save about $500 bucks if I would get it online, compared to say, a Bestbuy store. Any thoughts or stories with a online purchase of this caliber would be appreciated. Or good reparable store too!! Thanks ;) , B-72

i personally would never buy a tv online unless i knew the store had a great reputation when it comes to a tv.

and i would never buy one unless it was brand new in a box. any open box tv could have who knows how many hours on it.

and with an lcd and the light bulb having to be replaced every 3 years i would not any hours on the tv either as the bulbs cost about $300

As far as that bulb having to be replaced, are you able to purchase it and do that yourself ?
most models you can replace yourself i believe.

the sony i have shows you how in the manual. not all that difficult for the one I have but no idea about the model you refer to.

You don't happen to have the KDL46XBR2 model, do you? That's the one I'm looking at right now.
not sure which model i have.

but that seems way overpriced for a 46" LCD.

I paid a lot less for a 50" LCD less than a year ago. and prices have come down.

all i can tell you is to do a lot of shopping and research before you decide. and if you can wait there is new technology coming out later this year as i recall.

Do you happen to know what that {new technology } would be? I was planning on making a serious run at a purchase the end of this year.

Thanks for the input. I have been doing my homework for six months now. The prices continue to fall, I know. When you buy a Sony, your paying for the name, which equals big dollars.
I found the model on mine. sony KDF-E50A10 I paid i believe $2300 including stand and taxes.

It does not have picture in picture but I figured most cable companies will provide that.

I will caution on the size though. It is very difficult to gauge the size. also when you go in a store they have all the Hi-Def tvs on widescreen and not all programming comes in widescreen.

I spent a long time and bought mine from Circuit City. Was talked into the 60" which due to the speakers on the side was way too big for my room. So i returned it and got the 50". in the meantime Sams Club had the same TV on sale. It took some doing but I got Circuit City to honor their price guarantee. To me it was more than worth it to buy it locally. I had a lot more peace of mind and after shopping enough I found that I would not have saved any buying that set online. Funny as it may sound the best place i found to get info was Sams Club. I dont know if they work on commission but i got a lot more out of their help than the hired guns on commission at the other places.

sorry but i do not know what the technology coming out with is named. I would think if you go to a store that somebody would be able to tell you what it is called and how much more expensive it will be. all i know is somebody here said there is new technology that has a better pic than plasma. personally i did not see enough difference in plasma to warrant the cost

It is the SED TV - New Flatscreen Technology.

Good reading here too.

Ultimate HDTV buying guide

TV aspect-ratio converter/Screen size calculator

But I went to TV Guide and went to comcast cable, Dish Network and DirecTV with Local channels and then clicked on HDTV and it wouls show only HDTV. Now this was for what was on at a set time but even so Dish Network had the most HDTV channels. Comcast had the less. Guess you can get more HDTV channels from each but you also have to pay more to get all the added money for sports, HMO, Showtime etc. Comcast also keep jacking up the rates that just went up this month.
They also added 5 channels
Moved 2 channels
Dropped 23 channels

To find your service provider
http://tvguide.com/listings/setup/localize.aspx

This will list all you can get in your zip code so you can check out who has what.
Like now if I look at what is on at 6:00 PM at comcast and click the Show HDTV only it list only 12 channels. But I am not sure if they are all really HDTV or not.
They are list like this...
KVIE-DT
KTXL-DT
KXTVHD
D-HDTV
ESPNHD
HBOHDw
MAXHDe

So what is DT? but guss it is "Digital: A digital television, sometimes called a DTV, can also display progressive-scan DVD and almost always HDTV".

Dw is wide screen

De I say mines ... EDTV: This stands for Enhanced-Definition TV, and usually it describes a television that can display HDTV signals but doesn't have enough resolution to really do them justice. Most often it applies to plasma TVs and denotes 852x480 pixels.

So there really is not that much true HDTV to watch unless you rent or buy movies on DVD.
That would go along with what I read and forget just where but it said do not waste your money on the blue-ray because it cost so much money and there are not going to be that much you can really record to get what your paying for. Just get a cheaper Player/recorder to record that has the HDMI to hook up and rent the moives from Netflix.

We are still just over 3 years away.

What is the February 17th, 2009 DTV deadline date?
