Solved: No sound effects for Suspend / Resume?

Hi again! It's time for another cosmetic XP tweaking question.

In the out-of-the-box install, Windows XP on my notebook PC had this nifty feature I loved -- closing the lid to suspend operation, then opening it back up and hitting the power button to resume. It played this two-note piano melody when I did so, and then a more upbeat tune when I clicked on my avatar icon to get back to my desktop.

I've since reinstalled XP several times. Right now it does the exact same thing that it used to, but without the cheerful piano sounds. How can I get them to come back? Kind of a silly question, I know, but they really did brighten my day.

For reference:

  • Yes, the sound is turned up.
  • Yes, I have double-clicked on the speaker icon in the system tray and made sure sound is turned up on everything.
  • Yes, I have gone to "Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices" -> "Change the Sound Theme" on the Control Panel, and gotten the dialogue box where it lets you assign sounds to system events. I scrolled through the list, but I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for.

That last thing is as close as I've come to solving the "problem" on my own. Any suggestions?

The last thing you tried seems like the best route to get the sounds back and you're in the right area if the sound has just been changed to (none) from whatever it was before. Go back to the same place to change the sound theme and try setting it to "Windows Default" from whatever it currently is. If that doesn't work then I'm not sure, the sound file might have been deleted or be corrupt but this sounds (no pun intended) most likely to fix it.
Well, I set the sound scheme to Windows Default, and that didn't solve it.

On the other hand, I did do some digging around in that dialog box ("Sounds and Audio Devices Properties"). The exact sounds I'm looking for are under Windows -> Windows Logoff, and Windows -> Windows Logon. Both are turned on. And, when I resume operation on my notebook PC, it does have me select my user name to log back in.

So how come these sounds aren't playing?
If you click on the sound option Windows Logoff or Windows Logon do you see similar to this? It might not be exactly the same as this is from Windows Vista but it should be very similar if not the same. The thing I'm looking for here is the "Windows Logoff Sound.wav" in the "Sounds:" dropdown menu.

Yes Dyonas, I see that. And the sound effects are turned on. *nod* But for some reason they're not playing when I open my laptop lid and re-login.
Can you browse to the directory the sounds are in and play them normally? If they work from there I can't see any reason why it isn't working :/ Sorry I can't be of more help but this has me stumped too.
Browse to the directory? Heck, I can play them right from that dialog box. >.>

Alright then, thanks anyway.
Oh yeah -_- damn I'm off my game lately...
