Solved: MS-DOS Command Prompt Problem (cmd.exe, command.com)

I have Windows XP on my computer, and when I try to ping something through the command prompt (command.com), this shows up:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0f23 IP:010c OP:c4 f6 06 a9 02 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application

Running tracert also has the same problem.

If I try running ping or tracert through cmd.exe, it stalls and doesn't do anything. I have to close the program because it doesn't respond.

I can use ipconfig in both cmd.exe and command.com. Do I have a virus on my computer, or is there a way to repair the command prompt? I've attached a HijackThis log file.

Hi, cheaseeater :)

Check the computer for the existence of files that should be .exe and appear as .com files.

Download the enclosed folder and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a batch file. Double click on it and a new document will be produced. Post its contents in a reply.

Ping should be run through cmd.exe not command.com

Do you have a linksys router by any chance?

I could not do pings with a linksys router and a specific firmware version. It is corrected in the more recent versions.

If you are connected through a router -- try the ping command connected directly to the modem, bypassing the router.

The modem has an IP address? How would that work?

Hi, cheaseeater :)

Download ComboFix from Here or Here. to your Desktop.

Reboot to Safe mode:

Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard just before Windows starts to load. If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Perform the following actions in Safe Mode.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

When connected to the modem your WAN address will be used; this is the actual address that is seen in the internet and is what we see here.

When you are connected to a router -- you normaly see only the LAN address that the router assigns it when running ipconfig /all

Have no fear you will not lose any connectivity with this

But you didn't tell me whether you have a Linksys router. If you do, I KNOW this is the problem because I could neither ping or do tracerts until I upgraded the firmware. And IF you do, you may not want to upgrade to the very lastest version -- I had problems with that as well.

Hi, cheaseeater. :)

Your computer seems that was recently attacked. You also have ran Msconfig and the computer is now in Selective Startup. We will run a few scans, then please run Msconfig and set the computer to Normal Startup before re-scanning with Hijackthis to remove all those nasties.

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.

  6. Under "Reports"

  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company

Hi, cheaseeater :)

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    c:\windows\system32\fiz1
    c:\windows\system32\in10b6s.dll
    c:\windows\system32\stlb2.xml
    c:\windows\system32\winnet.ini
    c:\windows\inf\twaintec.inf
    c:\windows\sepsd.bin
    c:\windows\smdat32m.sys
    c:\windows\system32\FLEOK

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

The rest of the log looks clear. How is the computer doing?

Hi, cheaseeater. :)

Yes you can.

Congratulations.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Create a Restore point:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Please use the thread's Tools and mark this thread as "Solved".

Best wishes!
