I'm new to ME, I know it's 9X based rather then NT, but thats about it. with 98se, at least, I had an option at shut down to go into true DOS. Now I cant even find a DOS prompt. Anyway, scanreg/restore has always been a cure all for me and now I can't find it. Tried typing it in RUN but no file found, same with search. Is it in there? Hate to how my ignorance, but hey.....

To run Scanreg you can do it from the RUN or by using a boot disk.

At the RUN are you entering Scanreg /Restore (with the space).

In DOS it's not required, but the run requires it.

You can get to DOS through Start, Programs, Accessories, DOS Prompt. But ME does not have Real DOS so you cannot boot into DOS via the F8 key at startup (for Safe Mode etc.).
Why bother with scanreg /restore when you have Start, Programs. Accessories, System Tools, System Restore? Not only will this restore your registry but you can create your own restore points just before installing new software/hardware in case of problems, or at any time. To save time create a shortcut to rstrui.exe on your desktop.

"But ME does not have Real DOS"

Hello johnni,

In WinMe and using an EBD (bootup floppy) and choosing 'Minimal' one gets to an A:\> what form of DOS is this called?

aarhus - it is well known that ME doesn't have Real DOS and neither does XP. Yes, with a boot-up floppy you can get to A: and from there to C: and do things with it, but without the floppy you have to boot into ME to get to DOS. There are programs available to enable Real DOS but I have never tried them, and don't intend to.
I suggest you type "real dos" into Google and read any of the pages displayed for more information.
