I'm helping out a friend, his system seems very slow, but the only thing I can see wrong is that there is a little square browser on the desk top which will not close. It looks like it has something to do with Yahho mail. I'm attaching a HJThis log. Can someone lend ma a hand

I have also noticed a few other problems:
1. Windows Update will not work.
2. Internet connection fails and reconnects (every 45 seconds or so)

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Select all of the contents and Extract them
to a new folder called SmitfraudFix.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log in your next reply.

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Run Panda ActiveScan here

Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button.
A new window will open... click the "Check Now" button.
Enter your Country.
Enter your State/Province.
Enter your e-mail address.
Select either Home User or Company.
Click the big "Scan Now" button.
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes).
When download is complete, click on "Local Disks" to start the scan.
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the "See Report" button; then "Save Report" and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply.

Post a new HiJack This log along with the results from ActiveScan.

I have McAfee installed but can not update it because the internet connection will not stay up long enough. Is there any utility I can use to reset the internet connection? Right now I'm doing a system scan in safe mode with what ever defection files came with the install file. Will report back later

Greetings:

Good Morning I'm happy to report that last night I found the cause of the little browser on the desk top. When I clicked on the desk top display the option of "lock web items on desktop" was clicked and there were 2 site located there one being the Yahoo Mail Site which was sticking on desktop.
I have scanned the system with McAfee (which finally updated) and deleted the two folders in program files which had the been reported in the system scan. One being UPromise and the other being (not positive of name) but I think it was Free websites or My Free Websites. I've deleted the system restore points and I'm doing a new system virus scan now.

I'm still having the problem of the internet connection dropping (which is only happening with this system)

The only thing I can think of is you may have a program that is set to disconnect after update(s) are checked so let's cut down on the startups and see if it helps.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - "Startup" tab. Remove the checkmark from:

SunJavaUpdateSched jusched.exe

MimBoot mimboot.exe

QuickTime Task qttask.exe

TkBellExe realsched.exe
(Note: The above 2 entries pertain to QuickTime and RealPlayer. Every time you open and use either of them, they'll re-enable themselves in the startup list, so you'll need to go back and disable them)

ISUSPM Startup isuspm.exe

ISUSScheduler issch.exe

I found the connection problem! The guy has a 2Wire router at home and the 2Wire Portal Monitor was on and causing a conflict with my Belkin router. I disabled that and all stays connected.
I still have one problem with IE7 and auto updates and before I post on that I want to check a few things. Be back later

I'm happy to report that all is working perfectly. After doing a good clean up of the system temp files and doing a fresh install of IE7 the Windows Update worked fine. System is running smoothly. Many thanks!!!!! Now if I can only keep my friend away from crappy sites and make sure he cleans thinks from time to time, I shouldn't see this computer again (crossing fingers)
