Solved: Laptop won't connect to WIFI!

4751 Views 60 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Nutech12
Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 laptop that at home works great.

The problem starts when I go to other locations that i want to connect to. It won't connect and has been like this since I bought the laptop!

Without fail it will NOT connect.

Tonite, I plugged in my Mom's new Router, when I tried to login to the router - nothing. In Wireless connections available it says automatically store p/w and Connect.. when I click on connect it doesn;t even ask me for a password!

Change Adapter settings: Network connections (two of them) say not connected)

Anyone be able to help?

I have removed from Dev Manager the 3 network items listed and restarted the Laptop, Still no go!

try updating the driver from this site
http://support.toshiba.ca/support/isg/

you need the model number after entering L500

should be written on a label on the machine
The driver on the Toshiba website is: 7.003.0522.2009 this for the Realtek 8191

The one listed from my control panel>Network properties of the 8191 is 2020.4.620.2011

Could this be a problem?
would appear the one of the website is older of the last digits are for year
do you have the exact model
Sure its a Realtek RTL 8191SE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC

Do you think this might be a problem with the card? Seeing as it wouold seem I have the same problem every time \I try to log on to different wifi spots?

THx
and the exact model of the laptop

this looks like a later date driver
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...n=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true
Laptop: Toshiba Satellite L500 PSLOC-02J012
try the driver I linked to
its the same one I have installed
it shows up as 2012 Win7=v1086.48.0809.2011
BTW, in Network and Sharing > Manage network connections there are no connections listed, Even though in my adapter settings there are two connections indicated, Is this ok? It doesn't even list my home (I'm away for a week from home) network connection!
Manage wireless network ?
OR ?

can you post a screen shot please

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

so what happens if you try and connect to a wireless signal ?

also lets see an xirrus screen shot
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file to the faulty PC and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Download this file "DOWNLOAD WI-FI INSPECTOR Vx.xx "
( the site now appears to allow webbased emails like gmail, hotmail, outlook and yahoo now )

There is also a xirrus gadget, But that does not have all the fuctionality "DOWNLOAD GADGET Vx.xx

Alternative links - Use the links below

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-Monitor-Download-99109.html

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

Run the program

A user guide is available here
