[Solved] KERNEL32.DLL problem in Windows98

I use Windows 98SE and lately my computer has started crashing when I run Word's Find text in files in a designated folder (you could search for the word 'dog' in a hundred Word files, and the Find feature tells you which files contain that word). I don't know if this is a Windows98SE problem (or a Word problem).

The error message I get after running the Find feature from Word is: "Word has caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at [specifies memory locations]." I really need to use Word's find feature in my work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. (I've run Word's "Detect & Repair," but this doesn't solve the problem.)

Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com or http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm and click the Scan Now link to run a free on-line virus scan to ensure your computer is virus free.

You might try backing up (copying) all your Word documents to removable media (floppy or CD) first then uninstalling Word; Restarting your computer; Then reinstalling Word from the manufacturer's disks. Restoring your backups may not be necessary but backing up these sensitive documents first is mandatory.

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated! I did what you suggested, but the KERNEL32.DLL shutdown kept recurring. Would you believe that I found one Word file that had become corrupted, so that whenever I tried to search Word files for designated text, the KERNEL32 invalid page fault would happen. I deleted the bad Word document, and now everything seems to be running OK. What a lot of work because of a corrupted Word file!!

Thanks for the congrats. They really go to my non-computer wife, who said "why don't you move the most recent Word files out of your folders to see if that helps." The main folder held more than 400 Word documents. I moved the last ten to another folder, and then put them back in, one at a time, checking to see if the Find text in Word files command would work. Would you believe that the corrupted file was *the last one* (out of more than 400) -- of course!

Incredible how much frustration our machines can cause us when they get sick!
