Solved: ISUSPM.exe in WinXP

13K views 47 replies 3 participants last post by  flavallee
#1 ·
My computer is very slow and Task Manager shows agent.exe and this ISUSPM.exe running all the time.
If I stop the ISUSPM, then the agent also stops and my System Idle goes back to 98% or so.
My question is: do I need this ISUSPM.exe as it is in C:\ProgramFiles\InstallShield\UpdateService.
What do I remove? The update service?

Thanks in advance.

System Idle Process is supposed to be in the high 90's. That's normal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

ISUSPM doesn't need to load during startup and run in the background.

If you post a HijackThis log here, I'll be glad to assist you with the startup load.

Thanks for posting a HijackThis log. We've got a bit of work to do. :(

Before we go any further, I need to ask you some questions.

What's the brand name, model name, and model number of that computer?
(The brand name appears to be a HP, and it appears to be a laptop. If it is, the model number will be on the sticker on the bottom of the case.)

How much RAM is currently installed?

What peripherals(printer, scanner, iPod, camera, etc.) do you have connected to it or use with it?

Who is your Internet Service Provider, and are you using a 56K dial-up or a high-speed connection?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

#6 ·
This is a Dell Inspiron 9400 running winXPHE and with 1024RAM. I have an HP printer connected and a zip drive in USB port. Internet wis Verizon FIOS with ethernet cxn.
Thanks for posting the specs that I requested. That makes it easier for me to assist you with trimming down the startup load.

I thought ZIP drives went the way of Windows 95/98/ME, but you're one of those hold-outs who still use one.

Is the HP printer a stand-alone printer, or is it an all-in-one?

Unless you actually use it, uninstall HP Share-To-Web because it's useless and problematic.

----------------------------------------------------------------

#7 ·
I guess I used the wrong term. I have a 256mB mini-cruzer in a USB port.
The HP ia a 6210 All-In-One but I only turn it on to use it. Otherwise it is power off.
I will un-install the HP Share-To-web. Thanks.
I don't see it in Ad/Remove programs. Where do I remove it?
Anything else you can think of? Should I delete the InstallShield Update Service file?

#8 ·
I tried to remove HP Share -to_web file by going C/Program Files/HP/HP Share-to-Web and delete that file but it would not allow that. I got an access denied-- make sure that disc is not full or write-protected or in use??
I will try to delete individual portions first?

#9 ·
No, no! Don't try to uninstall a program by deleting its folder. It has to be properly uninstalled in Add Or Remove Programs first and then its folder deleted afterwards - if it's still there.

Don't worry about HP Share-To-Web. HP tends to resist having its programs uninstalled. I'm going to have you disable it in the startup list anyway so it doesn't automatically load and run.

----------------------------------------------------------------

It sounds like you have a Scandisk Mini Cruzer USB flash drive. If yours is only 256 MB, it's a pretty old model because they don't come any smaller now than 2 GB.

You can buy a 4 - GB model pretty cheap now, so you might consider buying a newer one with more storage space.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Are you ready to start trimming down the startup load?

--------------------------------------------------------------

#10 ·
I have a couple of other portable hard drives but didn't mention them as they are not hooked up now.
I did un-install HP PhotoImaging w/ Photosmart, HP Software Update and HP Memories Disc so far.

Yes!! I am ready to follow orders!! Thanks again for putting up with me.
Cheers, Jake

Jake:

Are you ready to follow my instructions to trim down the startup load?

---------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is unchecked, then close it.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Run a HijackThis scan, put a checkmark in

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'SYSTEM')

O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'Default user')

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} -
C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jp2iexp.dll

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jp2iexp.dll

then click "Fix Checked".

Run another HijackThis scan, then post that new log here.

jcport67:

You're encroaching in pathvet's thread with a log for a completely different computer. Working with logs from 2 different computers from 2 different users in the same thread makes things very confusing. You need to start your own thread.

Your computer definitely needs a lot of work, but I'm not going to discuss it in this thread.

Thanks for sticking with me as I did not get your last post notification in OE. So I have fixed the four files you designated and have immediately run another HijackThis log. No reboot, OK?

I await your next instructions. I do see that agent.exe and ISUSPM.exe are still running in the Task Mgr.

Cheers, Jake

Jake:

It's been a month since you last posted here. I was wondering what happened to you. I had to go back and read your entire thread to refresh my memory.

I've contacted the Administrator/Moderator and requested that jcport67's HijackThis log be removed from your thread to avoid any confusion and to get rid of the clutter.

OK. Let's get started on trimming down the startup load.

Be aware that .exe may or may not be part of the startup name in your computer.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Remove the checkmark in

ISUSPM C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe

HPHUPD04 C:\Program Files\HP Photosmart 11\hphinstall\UniPatch\hphupd04.exe

HPHmon04 C:\WINDOWS\system32\hphmon04.exe

Dell QuickSet C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\Quickset.exe

ATICCC C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe

Adobe Photo Downloader C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\apdproxy.exe

Adobe Reader Speed Launcher C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe

SunJavaUpdateSched C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe

QuickTime Task C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe

MSMSGS C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

Microsoft Find Fast C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

Office Startup C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

After you're done, click Apply - OK - Exit Without Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the services window to see the list more clearly.

Highlight and double-click on

Adobe Active File Monitor V5 (AdobeActiveFileMonitor5.0)

Ati HotKey Poller

Google Software Updater (gusvc)

InstallDriver Table Manager (IDriverT)

Intuit Update Service (IntuitUpdateService)

Java Quick Starter (JavaQuickStarterService)

Change the setting from "Automatic" to "Manual", then click Apply - OK. You have to do one entry at a time.

After you're done, close the services window, then restart your computer.

When the small SCU window(see screenshot) appears during restart, ignore the message. Put a checkmark in that window, then click OK.

Start HijackThis and run a scan, then post that new log here.

Again, thanks for being there. Sorry to put you to the extra work as I could not seem to find my old posting.
I have found and done all you asked. Here is the new log.

Jake:

If you're not using an Apple iPod or similar device in conjunction with iTunes and QuickTime, uncheck these entries in Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab)

AppleSyncNotifier C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleSyncNotifier.exe

iTunesHelper C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

and change these entries from Automatic to Manual in Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK

Apple Mobile Device

Bonjour service

iPod Service

If you do make these changes, post a new HijackThis log here after you restart.

Can I make a suggestion?

Make the setting changes, then restart your computer, then connect your iPod and see you can manually launch and update it.

Personally, I don't believe they need to automatically load and run, but you decide if they do.

Also, read here and here.

After some trepidation, I made the changes, restarted and then hooked up both the hard drive and iPod and was not able to notice any differences. It updated without a hitch!
So I am ready for any further suggestions. What about all this Google stuff I have? Here is my latest log.

After some trepidation, I made the changes, restarted and then hooked up both the hard drive and iPod and was not able to notice any differences. It updated without a hitch!
So I am ready for any further suggestions. What about all this Google stuff I have?
That's great. That's a few more startup and service entries that doesn't need to automatically load and run.

I'll be glad to help you get rid of that Google-related crap if you want to. What's listed in Add Or Remove programs with Google as part of the name?
