Hi there

A While ago i downloaded something and now have got a process called isamonitor.exe and cannot delete it below is my HijackThis log just in case.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

• 
  Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  Under Main choose: Select All
  Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

• Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  Click the Empty Selected button.
  NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

• Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  Click the Empty Selected button.
  NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
   • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
6. Under "Reports"
   • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
   • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Perform the following steps in safe mode:

1. 
   IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
2. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
4. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
   Once the scan is complete do the following:
5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware .

While in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab, then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

* Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" Delete everything except for "My Current Home Page". Click OK then Apply and OK.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post a fresh Hijackthis log along with the AVG Anti-spyware report, ActiveScan report and contents of C:\rapport.txt produced by Smitfraudfix.

i followed your instructions all except for the last one with Panda Activescan as it would not download it and got the error in the attached file.

No worries, i have the same problem some times.

While i was waiting for a reply i downloaded Super Ad-blocker and it picked up a few things so deleted them using Ad-blocker and isamonitor.exe was not in the processes and am in the middle running a full scan with ad-blocker and now has found nothing harmfull.

I ran HiJackThis again and selected the options you mentioned and fixed them and rebooted.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
   
2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
   
3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
   
4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
   
5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
   
6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
   
7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
   
8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
   
9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.

Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot preform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry

1. Go Here and download ERUNT
   (ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts
   (use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
3. Start ERUNT
   (either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
4. Choose a location for the backup
   (the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
6. Press OK
7. Press YES to create the folder.

Registry Modifications

Download the enclosed file. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a folder containing a Registry Entries file, fix.reg . Once extracted, open the folder and double click on the fix.reg file and select Yes when prompted to merge it into the registry.

Restart the computer.

Post a fresh log.

Hi to everyone that might visit this thread that has this problem. I recently got infected with the isamonitor.exe/isamini.exe trojan. After reading a number of threads in a few different forums I was a little overwhelmed at some of the solutions to the problem. Some even having to go as far as reformat.

The Problems:
1) You cannot delete some of the files (isamonitor.exe, isamini.exe) because the processes are running.
2) You cannot stop the processes (isamonitor.exe, isamini.exe) from running they restart automatically.
3) You are unable to remove the registry key HKLM\..\Run: ???? isamonitor.exe

What I did to stop this was:

Start Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL).

Open Windows Explorer to the directory where the files (isamonitor.exe, isamini.exe) are.

Hold down the Shift key and right click on isamonitor.exe and hit the Delete key. A small window will come up asking if you are sure you want to delete the file just leave the window open.

Next go to Task Manager right click on isamonitor.exe and click on End Process Tree. Once again a small window will come up asking if you are sure.

Drag the Task Manager window over top of the Explorer window and line up the 2 Yes buttons one (Task Manager) directly over the other.

Click the 2 yes buttons quickly one right after the other, the process should end and the file should delete before it has a chance restart the process again.

After this stop the other processes and delete the other files and the registry keys (search the registry for the files). This worked for me the first time I did it so I'm not sure that timing may be a factor when stoping the process and deleting the file when clicking on them. If it is maybe try running something in the back ground that is processor intensive to give you more time.
