I have a 5 year old Gateway GT5438 desktop/motorola modem SB5120/comcast broadband that started having frequent internet disconnect problems with my old linksys router which would resolve when I would reset the router. I figured my router was going bad so I purchased a new Belkin Share N300 router.

Now my internet connection through my wired ethernet port is super slow and sometimes disconnects entirely. My laptop which picks up the router signal wirelessly works fine and is fast. I checked and changed out my wires, changed ports on my router, ran Norton antivirus scan and Housecall virus scan.

Is it my computer, my ethernet card, or could I have gotten a bad router?

Sometimes NICs start failing by having trouble auto-negotiating a speed. See if this helps ...

In Device Manager right click on the ethernet - Properties - Advanced - for the "Speed & Duplex" property try various values starting with 100 Mbps full duplex and 10 Mbps full duplex.

Thanks for your reply. I tried what you said, but it didn't seem to help. So I returned my router and got a new one and now my internet connection seems to work fine. I guess it was the router.
