This is quite weird...but for three or so days now, my computer's Internet connection has degenerated to 56k speeds. My operating system is Windows XP Home, my browser's Firefox 2, and I connect via Verizon DSL. The only thing is, I do not believe that the problem lies with Verizon this time--my connection never dies, according to the computer--it always says that it's connected at a speed of 100 Mbps, as usual.

However, it often takes several refreshes to get pages to load. And AIM can't stay logged on. Whatever's going on with my connection causes AIM to disconnect, and attempt to reconnect. Same with Google Talk.

I believe that this is a problem with my own computer, as none of the others connected to the router have this problem. I would appreciate any and all help. Thanks in advance. ^_^

Suspects would include router port, cable, ethernet adapter and malware. You can easily check the first two. Third could be checked, but more difficult. For malware, best to ask a moderator to move this to the Security forum.

The cable is one thing I can easily (if it were easy--but why it would prove difficult is a different story lol) check on.

As for malware, I'd like to know more about that....since I've noticed that when I navigate to various sites, I'd see that Firefox was establishing communications of some sort with either i.i.com.com or dw.com.com.

Perhaps I will track down that moderator.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

We can check to see if malware is responsible.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
• Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
• Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Have you tried to do a system restore to a date before this started?

Nope, haven't so far.

Although, I am not sure how much I'll lose (concerning files) if I do try it.

EDIT: I just started the System Restore program (haven't ever felt the need to use it, so this is the first time). Seems that my newer files and programs will be saved...is this true?

System restore will not affect documents, pictures and that sort of thing.

If you've installed any new programs after the restore date you choose then you will have to reinstall them.

A system restore can be undone so it's a good option to try to see if it fixes your problem.

I haven't done the System Restore yet, as things went back to normal soon after you suggested that.

However, now I'm seeing something else--things are slowing down again (the only way I can tell is AIM and Google Talk disconnecting), but only while my firewall (ZoneAlarm) is running. When I shut it down, AIM is able to reconnect, as is Google Talk, and I have no problems navigating with my browser.

By the way, ZoneAlarm's log showed that multiple IPs were trying to make connections to my computer, all through the same port that I use for BitTorrent. They were all blocked, though. However, those random sites tried to connect every 1-3 minutes, as I remember it. Currently, my firewall's down, but AdAware's running a scan.
