I just installed a DVD-RW drive and copied my first DVD, no problems. Suddenly, when putting in an original DVD, the photo looks fine but the sound is that choppy jagging effect, as though it's bogged down. However, nothing else is really running.

Inbetween the time it was fine and wasn't, I played around with DVD Decrypt and tried to get a certain DVD to copy that would not. It reached 60 percent or so, stopped showing progress for a very long time, and then gave me a failed error message. Could I have burned/damaged the actual drive?

I don't get it. The sound for everything else on this PC is great, but DVDS are playing poorly. Any suggestions?

Doubtful that any copying attempts physical damaged the unit.

Check Sound Properties in Control Panel and see if Hardware Acceleration slider is pushed to the MAX.

Also, when the DVD is playing what is the CPU utilization % ???

What's running in the BACKGROUND ?

In my Windows XP Home, Sound properties tabs did not have Hardware Acceleration option, only volume control, that I could see.

How do I tell the CUP Utilization?

In the background, I'm not running anything - not even the anti-virus. All other tasks are closed and selective startup has only essentials.

I am having a very similar problem. My dvds are running very choppily. I have a new AOpen-based dvd cd combo drive. Ive tried using different dvd applications, but its always the same result.

Ive noticed that once I pop in the DVD and the drive starts spinning it never stops. Most dvds will auto-run some kind of dvd-player software installation, but whether I install the software or not the drive will continue spinning away, no activity lights flashing. Im pretty sure this is not normal. I think if I could stop that initial spinning, I could play my dvds normally. Any suggestions?

before you ask:
-the pc can handle dvds easily
-i dont have programs running in the background
-the dvds arent scratched and play fine in other devices

I have recently gone here
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm
and disabled the compenents I don't need, so the system is definitely not bogged. Also, when DVD is playing CPU usage says 40%.

DVD playback is still choppy. I'm out of ideas.

not clear on what that means. I'm a very typical home user. :)

Last week I bought a Compaq Presario SR1103WM-B
248 RAM
Intel D Processor 325 2.53 GH
40 GB DMA Hard Drive
DVD-RW VOM-12E 48x
ummm... no idea how to access info about the video card. :/

Have also recently tried this idea:
Go to Start - > Settings - > Control Panel - > System - > Hardware tab - >
Device Manager. Expand the tree for "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers", click on
the controller your DVD drive is using, then click on the 'Advanced Settings'
tab. Select "DMA if available" in the "Transfer Mode" drop-down menu.

----
But it was already all setup. *sigh*

Could having a generic DVD Drive be producing this poor quality playback?

GD,

Go back to the control panel sound properties. On the Audio tab click "Advanced" button then Performance Tab. You should see a hardware acceleration slider.

Move it to the right...higher!

As for : "How do I tell the CUP Utilization?" Look into the CUP and see if it is half full or half empty! Sorry I couldn't resist! :D :D :D ;)

UPDATE - I returned the drive and got a Sony one... instant perfection.

I have NO idea what was up with the other one. But thanks for reading, everyone.
