One of the systems that I had built, was returned to me yesterday with what sounded like malware problems. A lot of IE errors (the IE has to close type) especially involving horem.dll. The system has Windows Defender installed and at start up I get a warning about Deskwizz. Even though Windows Defender appears to remove it, it's always there at reboot.
Tried running an online Pandasoft scan, but it doesn't want to work. "Errors on this page". HiJack This log

Hi, norton850 :)

Looks like a Zango infection.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Perform the following steps in safe mode:

  1. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  2. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  4. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware .
Restart back into Windows normally now.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post a fresh Hijackthis log along with the AVG Anti-spyware and ActiveScan reports.

You would think I could follow simple instructions.  I updated JAVA and ran ATF. AVG found over 300 items and quaranteed them, but no report. My fault I'm sure. I was able to run Panda, but couldn't get it to open in a window large enough that allowed me to choose any options. I know it found some items, but I couldn't see what. What we are left with is the new HijackThis log. As you will notice some programs have been deleted that weren't need. Ad-Aware was also run and Spyware Blaster added. The good news is that I think that things are fixed.

Hi, norton850 :)

You need an Antivirus progam. You can select from the following:

Free Protection:

AVG FREE

AVIRA

AVAST

Activevirusshield

Shareware:

Node32

Reccomendation: -> Node32

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4ED92335-90FC-4BA6-9218-D4EB370379A7} - C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\horem.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ExploreUpdSched] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rwinqoed.exe GID002
O16 - DPF: {5526B4C6-63D6-41A1-9783-0FABF529859A} - http://cabs.elitemediagroup.net/cabs/mediaview.cab
O16 - DPF: {9AC54695-69A4-46F1-BE10-10C74F9520D5} - http://cabs.elitemediagroup.net/cabs/mediaview.cab

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close Hijackthis.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rwinqoed.exe
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Reset your ActiveX

Open IE and go to Internet Options > Security > Internet, then press "Default Level", then OK. Press "Custom Level." In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".

Once done, attempt to perform an ActiveScan again. If unable to perform the ActiveScan, follow these steps:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    • Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi, norton850 :)

The log shows two profiles, Owner and Owner.MOUNTAIN-4576BE. Please do the following logged as these profiles one at a time:

Delete JAVA Temporary Internet Files:

Start->Control Panel->JAVA->Delete Temporary Internet Files

Delete Temporary Internet Files:

Start->Control Panel->Internet Options->Delete Temporary Internet Files

The rest looks clear. How is the computer doing?

I'll see about removing them tomorrow. I would like to use the system a little more to make sure all is OK, but so far so good. I'll see the owner tomorrow. I really hate returning it without him letting me put an antivirus program on it.

I really appreciate your help.

Hi, norton850. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Create a Restore point:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Click Here for some advise from our security Experts.

Should you need Assistance in Removing AOL post a Hijackthis log and will assist you.

Just to make me feel better it wasn't my system that was infected but one that I had built a while ago and given to someone. Before I gave it back I had already put several of the utilities you suggested on it as well as the trial version of AVG and took care of system restore. I also strongly suggested that an antiviral program be purchased. Of course as you know all of these programs need to be used regularly and can't just sit on the drive!

The owner gave me $20.00 which I've sent (or will very shortly :D ) along as a donation to the site. I didn't want it to go toward my membership just a general donation and I'm not sure yet how to do that.

Thanks again.
