Hi,I got something that sets my homepage to "about:blank" though I caught it in action and the link is actually "http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&clcid=0x0409&pver=6.0&ar=home" It's some kind of search page. Also it adds several links and a folder full of about 20 more links to my Favorites.

Ad-Aware has found these files that I believe to be responsible, I've tried deleting them several times:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: Software\Microsoft\Internet

Explore\Main"Default_Page_URL" ("about:blank")

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: Software\Microsoft\Internet

Explore\Main"Start Page" ("about:blank")

HKEY_CURRENT_USER: Software\Microsoft\Internet

Explore\Main"Start Page" ("about:blank")

And I've also tried deleting the BHO No Name file in my HiJack this scan which always comes back with a different name, so I'm thinking that's no good either.

But I obviously haven't been able to fix these problems myself so I guess I don't know as much as I think I do, that's why I need some help.

I can get rid of all those R1 Search Files and even the BHO No Name will disappear for a while, but simply opening up the IE browser will reinvigorate it all, and I'll have to manually go in and reset my homepage if I want to avoid seeing the search page, and delete the extra links, etc....

Hello Mitoca and Welcome to TSG! :D

Before I get you to fix anything in HijackThis, I want you to do ALL of the following.

Download SpywareBlaster from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef

Install and run SpywareBlaster. Click on "Updates" and then choose "Check for updates". Next choose "Protection" and at the top you will see different tabs which are Internet Explorer, Restricted sites and Mozilla/Firefox. Choose one of them at a time and at the bottom click "Protect Against Checked Items" (make sure that all of the items are checked). Tick the boxes above the items. Make sure you do this for all of the top tabs. Mozilla/Firefox you only need to do if you have the user profiles on your computer. You may now exit out of SpywareBlaster.

Download Spybot S&D from here:
http://users.skynet.be/fa936042/spybotsd13.exe

Install and run Spybot S&D. Choose "Search for updates". Next choose "Download updates". After that, choose "Search and Destroy" and click on "Check for problems". If Spybot finds any nasties on your computer, make sure that they are ticked and choose "Fix selected problems".

Download CWShredder from here:
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWSInstall.exe

Install and run CWShredder. Click on "Check for Update" and download the latest updates. Next, click on "Fix". Exit out of CWShredder.

Run Ad-Aware. On the bottom right corner of Ad-Aware you will see an option called "Check for updates now", click on that and choose "connect". Download the updates. Next click on "Scan now" on the left side of Ad-Aware. Make sure that "Search for negligible risk entries" is crossed out and not ticked. Choose "Perform full system scan" and click "Next". After Ad-Aware scans your computer, Ad-Aware may find some bad files on your computer so make sure you tick them all and choose "Next". It will ask if you want to remove those items so just continue. After removing the items close Ad-Aware.

Download About:Buster from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=4289&file=11&evp=ae3de3780275c1771c4e5047af537d4a

First unzip all files from the zip folder to a folder or your desktop. Start it and hit "OK". Then hit "Update". A new screen should popup. On that screen hit "Check for Updates". If it sais it found an update hit "Download Updates". If it doesnt it will automatically tell you and exit. Now for the scanning part. Hit "Start" and then "OK". The program should start scanning. Then hit "Exit" and reboot.

Once rebooted run "About:Buster" once more to make sure everything is ok.

You are running an older version of HijackThis, please download the latest version from here:
http://www.click-now.net/cgi-bin/download.pl?file=0965

Run HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan and save log file".

Post the HijackThis log on this thread.

Hi Mitoca

Welcome to TSG! :)

You have a CWS hijack that requires more than just running CWShredder, AboutBuster etc.... Also the entries that are in Hijack This will change depending on what you have done.

Please rescan with Hijack This and post a fresh log and I'll help you remove it. I will not be back online today until around 6 or 7 pm. EDT. You may want to try to post the next log close to that time.

After you post the next Hijack This log, it is very important that you not restart your computer or attempt to do anything to remove this until I have posted the removal directions because the files and the entries in HJT will change and we will have to start all over again. It would be best that you do nothing at all with the computer until you get the directions.

Click here to download AboutBuster created by Rubber Ducky.

Unzip AboutBuster to the Desktop then click the "Update Button" then click "Check for Update" and download the updates and then click "Exit" because I don't want you to run it yet. Just get the updates so it is ready to run later in safe mode.
_____________________________________________________________________

Now go ahead and set your computer to show hidden files like so:

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

CAUTION: There is also a service named Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator and one called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) . These are the legitimate services. Do not stop those two.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer.

Go here and do an online virus scan.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself. Housecall will detect the leftover files from this hijacker.

This hijacker is known to alter or delete certain files so check this out please:

Download the Hoster from here . UnZip the file and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file.
Go here and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing your Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy)

Check in the C:\Windows\system32 folder to be sure you have a file named Shell.dll. If you do not have one, go to the C:\Windows\system32\dllcache folder.
Find shell.dll and right click on it. Choose Copy from the menu.
Open the System32 folder and right click on an empty space in the window. Choose Paste from the menu.

control.exe may have been deleted.
See if control.exe is present in C:\windows\system32

If control.exe isn't there, go here, and download control.exe per the instructions at the site.

IMPORTANT!: Please check your ActiveX security settings. They may have been changed by this CWS variant to allow ALL ActiveX!! If they have been changed, reset your active x security settings in IE as recommended here.

When you are sure you are clean turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Okay, I went through everything the first time and it didn't work. So I did it a second time, and this time I took the initiative to delete the BHO (no name) - apibx32.exe, and some other api* file that seemed to have replaced the javapr. I also found an api* file in C:\Windows\System32 which I deleted as well. I don't know if those were of any consequence, but it seemed to work after the second time going through everything.

One problem I encountered was deleting certain files in C:\Documents and Settings\Vaio\Local Settings\Temp... these are "~DFxxxx.tmp" files. The second time into safe mode I could delete the DF.tmp files from the previous time but 4 new ones appeared that I couldn't delete: ~DF383F, ~DF2279, ~DFB392, DFC9AA. Once I rebooted into Windows from safe mode I tried again. I deleted all of those files but now I can't delete ~DF2642.tmp and ~DF6087.tmp. I don't know if these are a problem or normal, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Also, I tried to do the online scan after the first reboot but it kept on getting screwed up and wanting me to send an error report in. After the second time when everything was fixed I tried to do the online scan again. But this time I had altered my Internet Options Security via the other link which controls the ActiveX settings; this would not allow me to start the download of the scan even after I added the site to my Trusted Sites. I tried the specific link, I tried http://housecall.trendmicro.com, and I tried http://housecall.trendmicro.com/*. None of these have allowed me to access the online scan. Can you offer me any advice?

Here's my latest Hijack Log too for good measure. I would appreciate if you could help me overcome the Security block and let me know if those Temp files need to be dealt with or not. I won't turn off my computer or mess with anything until I receive an "Ok" from you after posting this Hijack log.
