My desktop had to be cleaned of malware recently. The desktop was the host for the modem and router. While the desktop was out, we continued to use the wireless laptop. Now that the desktop is back I can not stay connected to the internet on the laptop unless I unplug the modem for two minutes then plug it back up. I also can not see the shared printer on the laptop so that capability is gone as well. I tried to reset the home networking but that did not correct the problem. Do I need to disconnect the firewalls on both computers to get internet and shared printing? Any help would be appreciated.

The Desktop shouldn't have any effect on the laptop when connected to a router.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I am sorry I just noticed this am in regrd to your reply. When I get home this pm will reply with all the info you need. I was able to get the internet back up on the laptop...only for a short time. I did plug my printer directly into the laptop and it still would not print even though the drivers are on the laptop. The strangest thing did happen...while the printer was plugged to the laptop the desktop would not come out of sleep mode. As soon as I unplugged the printer from the laptop then the desktop started working. Then the internet connection for the laptop disappeared. The desktop then started fading in and out with the internet. We had to reset the modem and router a few weeks ago and it looks like we have to do this again. It's nice when everything works but when they don't.....

Ok. I got my Lan and router up and going again. I took off the old drivers for my printer - HP Photosmart C5200 series. I then went to their website and reloaded the drivers. They are on the laptop. However when I tried to share the printer I get "windows cannot connect to the printer. Either you typed the wrong name or the printer has lost connection to the server. Both the host and laptop are on the internet. After reloading the drivers I did a reboot. But nothing happened.

This looks like a mis-configured firewall. You're totally blocked from the Internet, yet you can obtain an IP address from the router. Disable ALL firewalls and see if you can then connect.

I'm on the problem laptop. I tried three times, by disabling all firewalls, to see if I could see the printer but I had no luck.

I am using two firewalls. One is Miscrosoft Live and the other is Trend Micro. Should I disable one and if so, which one?

I did disable all the firewalls or so I thought the other day when I tried to get the printer to work. Is there something that I over looked, ie, even though I thought I disabled all could another have been hidden or just defaulted back to on without my knowledge?

If you can't ping the machine by name, there's still a firewall in the mix.

Let's see this for the other machine.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

The fact that each of these machines thinks it's the master browser seems to indicate you still have a firewall issue. Disable ALL firewalls on both of them to see if we can get by that issue.

Other than firewalls, about the only thing that comes to check is services.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Windows Zero Configuration (wireless configurations)
Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

I will look at those areas on both computers when I get home from work. Do I need to drop Trend Micro or Microsoft firewall? Is there a need for both?
