Hi there:

By no means am I a pro, but my friend knows a whole lot less than me. So I volunteered to look into his 'loss of internet connection'. ("Dude, I get like 18 internet windows popping up on me and I can't get to my favorite sites"). Of course, no A/V and only one outdated spyware program that another friend loaded and has probably never been used.

So, I d/l a free virus/trojan removal tool (avast!) and free a/v software for him (AVGfree). After removal of about 18 different viruses, I went on to the spyware...

With Spybot S&D I got rid of over 130 spyware apps and with Adaware over 200 more.

Now, onto the complicated stuff... I think I have an idea of what to get rid of w/ HJT, but I'd appreciate another set of eyes to look at the following log file.

Thanks in advance. Here's the log:

I think your SB and AA versions or old.

Please get AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

And SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

Check it for updates and then scan and fix all.

You need to remove via add.remove programs Wild Tangent and Viewpoint

And then

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Launch the application, and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.

Check all instances of aklsp.dll (and nothing else), and move them to
the "Remove" pane.
Then click Finish.

Restart in safe mode

Now delete the C:\windows\system32\aklsp.dll-> file

Boot and then
CWShredder http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
Close all browser windows, open cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" and let
it run.

Then restart your computer.

Post a new log

Okay, here's what I've done, step by step, per your instructions:

Got new Adaware & Spybot, removed many more nasties.

Removed Viewpoint & Viewpoint player, but found no mention of WildTangent in the add/remove programs dialogue box (although I do see it still in the HJT log below).

Performed required tasks in LSPfix.

Rebooted in safe mode, found no file called ASKLSP.DLL in C:\Winnt\System32 to delete.

Ran CWSshredder and no problems reported.

Restarted the machine and ran HJT again, here's the new log:

C:\WINNT\mmups.exe
C:\WINNT\suploads.exe

Okay, did as instructed above. Although you mention a few things that weren't in my log, I did fix those that were there.

Also, rebooted in safe mode, deleted msnappau.exe from the folder specified... question though, there is another file of the same name in the folder C:\program files\MSN Apps\Updater\01.02.2000.1001\en-us\msnappau.exe - should I delete this file as well?

Also in safe mode, deleted C:\Winnt\mmups.exe

Can not find C:\Winnt\suploads.exe or C:\Program files\se\v11\se.exe

After doing all of the above, rebooted again, ran HJT once more, here's a new log:

Okay, fixed the new recommendations above, and uninstalled new.net using procedure 4 (HJT didnt give me an error upon removal, just did it to be safe).

I played with msconfig a bit, and shut off a few unnecessary programs run at startup.

Re-booted, ran HJT again, here's the new log:

Sounds like everything should be hunky-dory, except one thing, I can't get on the internet with this thing. I unplug my network cable from my puter, plug it into this guys thing, and try to access ie, and get the infamous 'page cannot be displayed' error.

Can anyone help me with this now? I'm like a blind man in the dark here. What info is needed from this pc to diagnose the problem?

thanks.

Forget it - internet seems to be working fine now. I actually didn't unplug the nic cord from the PC first, I unplugged the nic cord from the modem to the router and plugged it directly to this laptop. Once I physically unplugged the cable from the back of my pc and plugged it into the laptop (so it's going through the router now), I'm now online. I'm actually replying to this post with the laptop.

Back to my original question - aside from the obvious downloading all updates to Spybot, Adaware, and antivirus and re-running all scans, can anyone spot anything else that might be malicious in the above, most recent HJT log? If not, thanks everyone for your help!

AAAGH!

As soon as I was on the internet for a little bit of time on the laptop, things started acting funky - locking up, new windows popping up. So I installed a pop-up blocker but then ie started to hang. Lots of noises coming from the hard drive. Closed all internet windows and went into task manager, and saw lots&lots of processes that looked very suspicious.

Rebooted and ran HJT again, here's the new log file - why is this adware coming back on so easily? Can anyone help please? I'm gonna run adaware, spybot, cws again in the mean time... thanks...

Okay, ran Adaware, Spybot, CWS, HJT, removed a couple of R1 entries.

Can someone review the following log and see if there's anything else that's malicious and might cause more problems if I try to get back on the internet?

Thanks:

That log is just about as good as you will get, nothing that I can see is standing out as a problem .....go here and download this as another guard against spyware getting onto your computer, update it before running it,it doesnt scan, you just need to enable it ......http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

Thanks again, will install & run - I'm leary about updating it over the internet b/c it seems that every time I connect, some other nasty gets put onto the system.

Latest problem: after updating Adaware to it's most recent definitions, I re-ran another scan. Fixed another 200+ problems. I've run it several times, and now I'm at the point where I keep getting eithe 3 or 4 problems found, but when I try to fix them Adaware tells me it can't fix it, and to let it try after rebooting... I've done this several times in a row now and same problem over and over. The problem according to Adaware is 'VX2' - 3 processes and 1 reg value. Does this ring any bells with anyone?

thanks again. Will repost with results of spywareblaster scan.

One other thing - I just noticed for the first time that there are two quick launch toolbars in the taskbar. Is this a problem? I deleted one of the icons (yahoo messenger), and both the icon I selected and its duplicate in the other quick launch task bar was also deleted... does this indicate some sort of setup problem?

thanks.

sweet - I'll try that VX2 cleaner right away - will post with new results after playing around online again after cleaning it.

BTW - disregard the quick launch question - I realized that there were two quick launches clicked on in the 'toolbars' options... I clicked off one of them and the duplicate went away.

thanks again for all of your help
