I got something called spy sheriff in my system last night. I switched off zone alarm for a while and bad things happened (I am stupid)

Anyway I thought I got rid of it using spybot, I did a system restore and removed it from add/remove programs etc. Zone alarm found 10 viruses but whenever zone alarm tries to do a spyware scan my system resarts itself. There are no other problems only that.

Tired spysweeper but it wont let me remove items till I buy it.

Welcome to TSG.

Please download gmer rootkit detector from Here
  • Unzip it and double click the gmer.exe file
  • Select rootkit tab.
  • Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for 'Show All'.
  • Press scan
  • When it has finished press save & post back the log it makes in your next reply
  • Repeat the proces with the Autostarts tab and do the same there

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Perform the following steps in safe mode:


  1. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  2. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  4. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware .
While in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab, then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

* Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" Delete everything except for "My Current Home Page". Click OK then Apply and OK.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post a fresh Hijackthis log along with the AVG Anti-spyware report, ActiveScan report and contents of C:\rapport.txt produced by Smitfraudfix. (Remember the GMER reports)

Ok have gone through your list of things to do.

Firstly when I start the gmer.exe I get a message warning 'WARNING!! Gmer has found system modification which might have been caused by rootkit activity' Do you want to fully scan your system? I choose yes - the scan starts and runs for a while before restarting my system. I tried several times and it always restarted me.

I skipped to the next instruction - completed the ATF cleaneras required.

Got avg spyware - report attached
used Smitfrad - report attached
ran the panda scan - report attached
re- ran HJT - report attached.

I did try to run zone alarm spyware scan again but it is still restarting my system. I will try to run the gmer one more time and post if any change.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.


3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log .

WOW! thanks a million for all your help.


Ran the zone alarm spy scan and it didnt resart!
ran the gmer thing and it made it right to the end without restart!

is my problem fixed?

I believe so. Congratulations.


Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close Hijackthis.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Create a Restore point:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

Im back - like a nasty virus!

I have to say at this point that this is not my account it is my sisters she helped me find you and those have been my HJT reports etc. Sorry and thankyou bedhead!

Here it is..... I was only delighted with the help I recieved here and I would like to thank you again. I have since taken all of your advice and did as I was told. Everything ran smoothly for a day when I re ran all of the checks the found nothing.

Afterwords (one day) my system did its own scan with ZoneAlarm and AVGspyware and found another virus! Ok, so ZoneAlarm and AVG reckon they got rid of them. What I want to know is why I keep getting them??? Are they 'embedded' into my system?

Here goes for a few other 'stupid' questions.......

I am currently running 5 (yes 5) systems from my home router. I have 3 and the kids have one each. Can there be viruses etc in the router? As in if this (the HJT report one) was infected does that mean the others will be? Please forgive my ignorance I just have to make sure.

Does the firewall in the router need to be set to high? Can the security in the individual systems not protect them?

Why in the heck do viruses want to get us anyway - I don't get it?

Again, forgive my ignorance :(

If File Sharing is enabled, the virus may transfer from one computer to the other.

In regard to your router settings, I will contact an Expert in Networking that may be able to advise you.

no file sharing is not enabled and the computers are not even 'networked'. I once tried to netowork them so we could use one to 'store' music and play it from the others but my firewall settings were set so high it never happend. We are directly linked to the router wit two of them and wireless with the other three but they are not connected to each other (does that make sense?) only to the router.

There are no known virus/malware strains that have attacked routers that I've ever heard of.

There normally isn't any reason not to use all the firewall capabilities of the router, so I'd just turn it all on.

You'd have to study human nature to answer that question. :D

If all the machines are connected to the router and sharing the Internet, they're also connected to each other. :) All it takes is some configuration.

If you want to protect machines individually on the network, you need to use a software firewall and inhibit any sort of file sharing. That will isolate you from other machines on your local network. Since you've managed to pick up some virus issues, that's probably not a bad idea. :) Turning off file/print sharing altogether on individual machines is also a good idea for maximum protection.

I almost forgot to mention my favorite topic, BACKUP! If you have good backups, a total crash is only an inconvenience, not a disaster. :D
