If I uninstall my DVD/CD drive then reboot my computer, will it find it and re-install automatically? I can't read any program discs in that drive and it's driving me batty. I can't install my accounting program.
Thanks

I do hear it spin - I can burn music onto a blank CD but it won't read any program CD's, ie, I tried to install Simply Accounting, a print, CDStomper and Nero...no luck.

will it play music CD's OK

what happens when you try and install the program
is it a problem that its not auto running

can you use windows explorer and see the files on the program CD's

what happens if you browse to the CD and run setup or install from the CD

Yes, it will play music CD's no problem. When I try to use a program disc (i.e, Simply Accounting) I put the disc in, it spins and nothing else happens. It eventually stops spinning. I have tried exploring the "D" drive, nothing shows up on it, I tried "browsing" through the "run" command, nothing. There is no auto start. It just looks as if there is nothing in that drive even though there is a disc in there.

if the drive plays music cd then the drive is likely OK.

if you can't run your accounting program and when you try to
explore that disc and it shows nothing then suspect that
disc as being bad.

put in another program disc or a data disk and explore that.
if you can see something then the drive is not bad.

if the accounting disc is the only
one giving you a problem then you have one bad disc.

It says:

Autoplay
There is a drop down menu (music files is showing)
Then it says Action and lists a bunch of programs that I can use to open the files.
Prompt me each time to chose and action is clicked.

I have tried Simply Accounting, Nero CD Burning, CDStomper and a printer disc, all of which have done the same thing.

if it is a store bought disc and one drive reads and another doesn't
then the drive that doesn't read may be going out of alignment.

that can happen after sometime of use. it is reading good
enough to do the data on the music disc but not good enough
for that program disc.
