Solved: Folders stuck in read only on XP Home

I don't know how long this has been this way, but my folders seem to be stuck in read only. Whenever I right click on a folder, choose Properties, the box by Read Only is filled in. I clear it, click Apply, it seems to do something, but then if I right click on the folder again, choose Properties, it still says it's Read Only.

It doesn't seem to bother any other program besides Paint Shop Pro (7.04). It used to work fine on this computer, so I'm not sure what happened and I'm not sure how long it has been this way, but it's extremely frustrating. Paint Shop Pro will sometimes let me save a file, but most of the time it says it can't create the file because the folder is read only. Any ideas how to fix this?

Have you run Windows Update recently? Do you have Service Pack 2 installed? Have you checked to see if there is an update / patch available for Paint Shop Pro to fix this? Just some things for you to consider; hope these questions help you resolve this.

I'll try to answer all the questions in the posts. I am very grateful for your advice.

Yes, I keep my Windows updates up-to-date, so yes, I have SP2 and all the latest updates. And yes, I checked for updates to Paint Shop Pro -- I was on 7.02 and updated to 7.04, but it didn't solve the problem. I have Norton Anti-Virus, which I run every week; I ran it today just to be sure and it finds no worms or anything.

I just want to clarify, I have looked at a lot of the folders (I wouldn't claim ALL) but every one I look at says that it is Read-only. Any attempt to change it is ineffective. But none of the other programs seems to care. I can write Word files, update databases, spreadsheets, etc. But Paint Shop Pro is bothered by it most of the time.

I ran HijackThis and I can't tell if there is anything weird in there or not. Can I just post it here and have someone tell me if they see anything weird? I'll try making it an attachment and see if that works.

Okay, so it sounds like the Read-only thing in Properties is normal? So that doesn't explain why Paint Shop Pro started acting this way. I've been using it for 3 months before this and it was never a problem. Okay, here's the HijackThis logfile for every one to see.

Don't want to spoil your fun guys, but all folders in XP are Read-only by default. Create a new folder. It's Read-only. Change this by unchecking the Read-only box. Re-open the Properties window - it's Read-only again!
Thanks for the information; ANOTHER good reason to hate XP! However, I hope you'll provide a link to substantiate your statement; I don't use XP, so I have no way to verify what you've told us.

I'm no expert on HJT, but I looked through your log and didn't find anything out of the ordinary, so for now, I'll have to believe that your system is clean.

Okay, after fiddling around with it some more, it seems that what I thought I had fixed about Paint Shop Pro is still a problem. Although I swear that it wasn't doing this before, but it appears that when I am logged in as myself, it doesn't let me write files, but when I'm logged in as my husband (it used to be his computer so his user account was the first), then it works. Evidently, Paint Shop Pro 7 doesn't work with the XP user account stuff very well. My earlier problem was with not being able to see any of my directories, just the shared directory (for our home network). I finally resolved the problem (after trying a reinstall of PSP7, didn't help) by making my directory shared on the network. At last I could see my files, but I didn't have any trouble writing files until lately, so I'm still mystified. Unfortunately, PSP7 is no longer supported by technical support, so I'll either have to work around it or buy a newer version. (sigh) Don't you just love this?

It still is weird that all the folders show up as Read-only on the XP, which is my experience at least. Sorry to have troubled you all, I really thought it was an XP problem, since all the folders were showing up as Read-only. Makes it so hard to figure out what the problem is. Grrrr.

Thanks for your time, everyone.

Hi ajramsay

Just ran a random check on my Desktop folders and all of them were marked Read-Only, changed them and they returned to Read-Only.

Is your User Account an Administrative account or a limited user?
If it is a limited user, you may not have sufficient permissions to write files.

Login to your husband's account and check what setting your User account has and change it to Administrative if necessary.
Control Panel > User Accounts > Change an Account
Select: Your User Account
Select: Change the Account Type
Select: Computer Administrator

Let us know if that makes a difference.

For your HijackThis log:
With all windows closed, rescan with HijackThis, place a check mark in these lines and click Fix

Yes, I am an adminstrative account. It's one of the first things I checked. (sigh) So there's nothing to change.

I did the HijackThis and fixed those lines. I trust that was something I didn't want? I don't use IE very much because it is such a security risk, but some pages won't work with any other browser - grrr. Thanks for the tip.

My plan is to try uninstalling PSP 7 and reinstalling under my user account. I did once before, but I think I let it preserve my settings when I uninstalled. This time I'll do a complete uninstall. If that doesn't work, c'est la vie and I'll just work around it.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Yes, the red.clientapps is associated with the Red Sheriff Data Miner.
Do you use Ad-Aware?

Let us know what happens after you reinstall.

I am including some links on User Accounts, perhaps you will find something of use there, like possibly copying the program from your Husband's User Account to your User Account, using the control userpasswords2 Dialog Window.

Yes, I use Ad-Aware and SpybotS&D -- I run them once a week.

The good news is that reinstalling is a success! :D
This time when I uninstalled, I told it to uninstall everything, I restarted, then deleted the directory under Program Files, restarted again, and then installed from scratch. Now I can save files and it doesn't think they are write-protected.

Thanks for your patience and helpful suggestions. I will keep all those links in case I run into other user account issues. Thanks!

I have a very similar problem. All of my folders on XP Home are stuck in read only. Except, I don't have the ability to work around this by doing a reinstall. I am trying to install two different games (Emperor and Civilization 3--actually, Half-Life too now that I think of it) and it says that the files cannot be copied, in each case. Please help.

thanks,
Peter Kirby
