Need ideas on how to remove PW protection on a Win 98 unit. I have removed the system win PW's but the folder still is calling for a user ID. Not sure if progream is using a third party PW but nobody that used unit in past remembers any details after 6 yrs.

I don't believe Windows 98 has any built-in folder password protection, so it's likely a third-party utility. Without knowing what utility was used, it's unlikely the folder can be opened.

Does it contain crucial data? Is it worth money to retrieve?

You're either going to need to purchase software that might be able to crack the password (which could also take days, weeks, or months to process), or you'd have to pay a professional data recovery company to attempt to recover the data which could costs thousands of dollars.

The problem is compounded by the fact that you don't know what application was used to password protect these folders. The data may be irretrievable, but a data recovery company will likely want money up front for trying.
