Hi, I couldn't find where it was leaving it's log, so I ended up running it 3 times but the reuslts were the same every time. So I copied this:-

TDSS rootkit removing tool, Kaspersky Lab, 2010
version 2.2.3 Feb 4 2010 14:34:00

Scanning Services ...

Scanning Kernel memory ...

Completed

Results:
Memory objects infected / cured / cured on reboot: 0 / 0 / 0
Registry objects infected / cured / cured on reboot: 0 / 0 / 0
File objects infected / cured / cured on reboot: 0 / 0 / 0

Press any key to continue . . .

turn off each of your security tools in turn , until we find which one is doing it

It looks like either defender or adaware

I turned each of the following and tried to open the same link as mentioned previously each time, but it still didn't work:

Defender
Ad-Aware
Eset firewall
Eset antivirus

?

if it is only sponsored links and it is both browsers, then it must be some security tool on your computer causing it

might be winpatrol

might be yahoo toolbar

This is strange, I've turned off Winpatrol, disabled my firewall and anti-virus, disabled ad-aware, set Defender to NOT detect things automatically and I don't have the yahoo toolbar installed anymore.

Tried the following link (same as before)
http://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=CPBmxBRx0S47JK4zY0QSzk_C0BNjQtKIBpML3pA3CqqAFEAEgtlQoBVDZoJCPB mC7jrCD0AqgAejKo_YDyAEBqQKu0m6PvRm3PqoEIU_QUZXsfLJBcrzFcxiuLE2-VIqp9tPhefGD7wUQL-Ew8oAFkE4&num=3&val=ChAxMmI1MWM4ZDAwYzYwYTA2EOeKvNgEGggQrcHHFm353CABKAAwl4T sndrD2Yj8AQ&sig=AGiWqtwQSV3998Zs29e3GOkN2luYWIrfZw&adurl=http://www.vivastreet.co.uk/

and it still doesn't open.

Just as a sanity check can you check the link at your end?

Sorry, I feel such a muppet, I didn't realise I could scroll down for more options on Defender!

Anyway, this time I have disabled it and UAC is turned off as well and still the website won't open.

In that case I really don't knowe but don't think it is malware so am moving you to web & email to see if anyone there has any ideas

*Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and the other tools it downloaded to remove the malware*
* Click START then RUN
* Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.

This will also purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Now Empty Recycle bin on desktop Then reboot.

Sometimes when you "turn off" or "disable" one of those security applications, especially one that is corrupted, it just gets more ornery. You probably won't like this, but my suggestion is ...

Un-install Winpatrol, Adaware, Eset and all the rest. If any have a Removal or Cleanup tool or procedure use that also. Make sure the Windows firewall is enabled. If this is Vista or 7 make sure UAC is enabled. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials (as a side effect, that will put Windows Defender out of its misery).

You may feel naked, but you're actually pretty well protected at this point if you are not a reckless surfer.

Any difference with the problem links?

Do you mean un-install all those things permanently? Or just temporarily?
That's completely your choice. My hope and expectation is that one of those is corrupted and causing the problem, or possibly a couple conflicted with each other, and uninstalling them will resolve the immediate problem.

If it does and you choose to install some or all of them I suggest you do at most one a day--give yourself some time to make sure it is working OK before you install the next one. And uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials before installing another anti-virus or anti-spyware.

Hi, well I've done exactly as you suggested but I'm sorry to report that it hasn't made any difference, the link that I've been using all along as a test (in this thread) still doesn't open.

I don't know what it can be--you've been cleared for malware, it happens in two browsers, you've tried w/o add-ons, and we've wiped out your security applications. My final idea is to reboot if you have not done so after the last un-install. Sorry.
