I changd from a PC with XP to a PC with Vista and connected the external to my new computer. When I now try and save to the exernal it says that I can't as it's read only. Why would this be?
What you need to do is clear the read only attribute from the external hard drive. To do this you will use the diskpart utility.
Type cmd in the start area of the search menu.
Right click on cmd.exe in the area above and select run as administrator.
In the command prmpt type diskpart and the other commands as I have shown. Make sure to select the disk associated with the external hard drive. In detail you will see that it has the attribute of readonly (unlike mine). In the example mine was not cleared because it was not read only in the first place. Yours should work.
Weird thing, the diskpart command showed the read-only set to No, but running the "attrib disk clear readonly" command, I got the "Disk attributes cleared successfully" response and the drive was back to read-write
