I started my computer yesterday, everything booted up until my desktop wallpaper came up and I got an error saying somthing like: Explorer has performed an illegal operation and will shut down.

Then all I have is my desktop background. No icons, nothing.

Is there somthing I can do to fix this? Or am I screwed?

Thanks in advance for all answers.

I got the maleware removed, and things have been fine since. I can boot to safe mode but it does the same thing. I cant hear any unusual noises from the box.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks again.

No I have not added anything.

I did update the firmware on my cd rom. But that was over a week ago.

I think everything is still there. I ran scandisk, and found no errors, and it looked like the same amount of memory is still being used.

I dont have my windows98 installation disk, but I do have the product key.

Is there a way I can reinstall Windows, or fix the corrupted files from the command prompt?

Thanks to help on another thread I think I might haved solved the problem.

I did this:

C:
cd\
cd windows
cd command
scanreg /restore

Then everything booted up.

I then ran spybot and the same thing happened again. I redid the scanreg thing. Then ran adaware, then spybot, and everything seems fine.

Is the original problem still there? Has anyone heard of this before?

Here is a current hijack log:
