So in linux I would see thumbtacs and a few windows applications have some kind of thumbtack icon. Click on it and it looks like it tacs the window or something, click on it again and it untacks. I for the life of me never really knew what they are for. Hook a dummy up?

You are correct.

If you click on the pushpin then the window stays up when whatever process it was running has completed.
Otherwise, if it is not pinned, then the window closes.

I like to pin my Outlook Express window for polling messages so that I can verify what the number of messages was that it polled.
