Solved: Downloads won't run

882 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Mark1956
I have somehow caused a problem with some programs on my computer. I have an Acer Aspire 5251 laptop running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Most of my icons have disappeared off my desktop and the few left all have the Google Chrome icon. When i try to download a new program I get the message that the file has no program associated with it. I tried to restore to an earlier version and get the same message. Same thing when I go to Defaults and file associations and troubleshooters. I have no Windows 7 program DVD as I bought this computer used. Also my backup file did not work either (I back it up once a month). I can still load Google, Yahoo, Facebook and many other preloaded apps but nothing I try to download. Can anyone please tell me a way to fix this? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated! I am disabled and on a fixed income so have few resources to spare.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Please run this and tell me how well the system operates when complete.

Download this and save it to the desktop: Windows Repair Use the coloured button next to Direct Download just below Installer (9.08MB) to start the download. NOTE: DO NOT use the green buttons at the top of the page as this is dubious software that could infect your system with Adware.

Close your browser and any running programs, double click on the Tweaking icon on your desktop to run the tool. When the program opens click on the Step 5 tab. Under System Restore click on Create and wait for the confirmation to appear just below the button.

When complete click on the tab Start Repairs, click on the Start button. Then click on Unselect All and tick the boxes next to the items in the list below.

When done click on the Start button and leave it undisturbed until complete.

  • Reset Registry Permissions
  • Reset File Permissions
  • Reset Service Permissions
  • Register System Files
  • Remove Policies Set By Infections
  • Repair Missing Start Menu Icons Removed By Infections
  • Repair Icons
  • Remove Temp Files
  • Unhide Non System Files
  • Repair Volume Shadow Copy Service
  • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
  • Repair File Associations

John:

It's always good to have a recovery disc kit or a Windows reinstall disc for your computer to fall back on.

Since you live in the U.S.A., you should be able to purchase a recovery disc kit for your computer.

Go here, then navigate to

Acer
Laptop
Aspire
5251
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

then select your postal option, then follow the directions from there.

Your solution worked very well. Did not have all my desktop icons return but that seems to be the only issue so far. I appreciate the assistance and am forever in your debt. This is a wonderful service and will send a donation soon. You are the man!:up:
Thank you on behalf of TSG for the offer of a donation and glad to here your troubles are solved.

For any icons that are still missing you can simply create new shortcuts.
