I have a dial up connection (it's a adsl, but you have to use dial up to connect) and lately I have a problem with it. When I connect to the server everything is ok, but my software can't see the network. Example: I start Firefox, a dial up pops up, dial the number, connect and establishes the connection, but firefox can't reach the start page and no other application can use internet. This lasts about a minute and then suddenly everything work fine. This happens only once every session (if I disconnect, and dial again everything is ok, but after restart it happens again). I've noticed one weird thing. There are a few svchost.exe processes running and during dialing one of then is using ~98% CPU. If I close it (thru Task Manager) suddenly everything works and I can browse the web. I have a firewall, but if I swich it off (almost a heart attack) nothing changes. Does anybody know what to do with this? Maybe tweaking my connection settings would help, but I don't know what to change.

Have you recently added the spybot host file recently? A large host file can cause this slowdown in windows xp and 2000.

To resolve this issue open the "Services Editor"

* Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
* Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
* Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
* Select: Manual, click Apply\Ok and restart.
