My friend and I are currently working on setting up a network in his new office to open soon.
I have run into a situation that we both do not understand how to fix.
There are 3 computers:
1 laptop (access Internet through wireless router)
1 desktop (access Internet through wired)
1 small buisness server 2k3 (used mainly for a client/server program used towards his occupation)
We setup the server today, it came preconfigured with windows 2k3 small buisness server. After installation was all complete, we then created a domain (NWSRV) and obviously the server was the DC.
At first, we did not install/configure DHCP on the server, bc we thought just to let the router provide this. (We later figured this is where the problem started) So then the server was provided with a IP from the router, and could access the internet. But yet, none of the PC's could connect to the domain - the desktop keeps coming up with an error along the lines of "DNS name for the DC not found."
The setup:
Comcast provides DSL internet connection to a modem, which then plugs into a netgear wireless/wired router. The router then has the desktop and server plugged into it.
The server is obtaining its IP through the netgear router i believed, so i went into the router and configured the router to "NOT act as a DHCP server." In hope that this would rectify the situation, yet then none of the computer could access the Internet and still no joining of the domain.
In DNS on the server, it has the old ip that it was obtaining.
DHCP is not installed on the server, but no scope has been set.
All computers are set to obtain the IP automatically.
Can anyone please help us, we do not have no idea where are we going wrong.
Is there something i have to configure on the router to allow the computers internet, and then configure the server to give out DHCP addresses?
I have a strong feeling that its an issue on the router, DHCP on the server is not setup correctly, and there might be an error in DNS.
Do i have to call comcast to obtain any specific IP addresses for any reason?!?!?
I just want to get the computer to have internet access and join the domain.
Please tell me anything you can, for we are going to try to attempt again tommorrow.
