Why does FAT32 Hard Drive go to 2% then back to 0% when defraging (it restarts itself basically) same with Disk Check.

Hi,

Probably because the disk has errors. Suggest you go to Start => Run and type in "cmd" {without the quotes}. Type in (or copy/paste) chkdsk /f
You should get an option to run chkdsk on the next boot. OK to this.
Restart
Try running the defrag in Safe Mode.

Usually this is because some program (like anti-virus) is running in the background.

Boot to safe mode and run the scan again.

Yes, there are many programs that can be running in the background that would cause a defrag or scandisk to keep restarting.

That's where booting to safe mode can solve that problem.

Note, to get to a command prompt in Win98, it would be start / run / command. The other would be for a NT based operating system like NT4, Windows2000 or XP.

do you regard this as a problem or merely an inconvenience?
my win 98se will often go back to the beginning of the defrag process during the o-10% section of checking; the first 10% seems to be the hardest to check and analyse; once it gets past that it zips along ( also have fast processor)

of interest, the scan disk will stop and restart if you have a screen saver or Mailwasher running

It is typically a problem because it will not continue after a certain amount of stops and restarts. The same thing is apparently happening with a scandisk as well

So again the easiest solution for running both to completion is to just boot to safe mode and run them.

have you ALWAYS had this problem or has it recently started?

scan disk DOES stop and restart but the defrag should just run apart from a brief glitch at the beginning; of interest, do you have a good processor there?

Again, both will stop and restart if any programs are running that will interrupt the process. This is nothing new and has been like this for years with Win9x.

The simple solution is to just boot to safe mode. Then you don't have to do any guessing about all the potential programs that may or may not be causing the problem. Fortunately the processor speed doesn't have any relation to this particular problem as well. Heck, defragging on a 75 MHz processor worked fine. Figure you are way past those days.
