Solved: Confusing Info re Local and MS Accounts

1006 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Tabvla
On my personal computer I have both a Local and an MS Account.

I was reading some tech info (on a reputed tech web site) on W8.1update2 and came across this rather interesting statement

".... if you are logged into your computer using a Local Account and then if you login to a Microsoft Account (e.g. an Outlook.com email) from your Local Account, W8.1 will automatically convert your Local Account to an MS Account and the process is irreversible, in other words you cannot convert the account back to a Local Account....."

That sounds like nonsense to me. It also seems to sound like nonsense to Mark Kaelin of TechRepublic who about a year ago authored the article at the link below. What makes me stop and think is that Mark wrote his article with regards to W8.1 before Update 1 or Update 2. Is it possible that MS has changed the Account rules in U1 or U2....?

SpywareDr, thanks for your reply.

No I didn't test Mark Kaelin's instructions. This is my personal computer which took many hours to setup and I am therefore rather reluctant to mess things up. Currently I don't have an 8.1 test computer (I only have test machines running XP and Vista) so am unable to test ideas in an 8.1 environment. When the budget allows then..... :)

But it seems incredibly rude if Microsoft automatically change a Local to an MS account if the user logs into their Outlook.com email from a Local account. That just seems wrong. But then again MS do sometimes like to really annoy their users.

I can confirm that the above is nonsense. The Local Account does NOT get converted "automatically" to an MS Account. The user has to authorise the conversion and the account can then be converted back if the User wishes.

Some "technical" websites need to be more careful in what they publish.:down:
