I got a Dell Inspiron Desktop 530. As the title says I can't boot from anything but the originally installed OS on the HHD. When I try to boot from let's say a USB flash drive(same thing with CD) the black screen with a white blinking "-" in the upper left corner comes up and doesn't go away. I don't live in the US so Dell won't support by email, phone or chat. Anyone ever had this problem, anyone know how to fix. And don't tell me that
"Just press F12 to load boot menu". (I've asked this question on other sites and as fast as some idiot sees the word boot he comes with the brilliant idea of that I should load the boot menu of some reason.)

Really need help:(

I usually don't use this old piece of crap but now I need to.

Many things. I have been booting from this (and many more) device many times on different puters. I know what I'm doing don't get smart *** on me. Just asking if anyone got some experience of having problems booting from a dell PC and what they did to solve it.

I have a Dell computer, and it boots just fine from the CD/DVD drive, so there must be a problem with the disk you're using, the drive, or the motherboard. Start replacing one piece at a time.

I see several threads in other forums here: http://forums.linuxmint.com from another prooz having difficulty the past several days booting Linux Mint from a USB drive on a Dell, Macbook, and HP. Also problems with Grub and booting Vista.

So assuming you are the same person, are you sure what you put on the USB drive and CDs is bootable?

Cool that you found my threads(and a little creepy). But those have nothing to do with this. No Linux on the USB or CD
So yes I'm sure these are bootable. I have used them many times before on many different puters.
One more thing... are you active on the Mint forum or did you google my alias?

That's what i'm afraid of, that it's the motherboard. This puter had problems booting from anything a year ago (dunno what it was, wasn't involved). I'd really prefer not touching the motherboard at the moment but if I have to I have to :(

You've already had one thread removed due to a rules violation and being rude to members is not acceptable either. So I suggest you read the rules and please be more careful in the future.
