Solved: Blank Screen - Is my computer dead?

The other night I closed my laptop to go to sleep, and the next day I went to turn it on, but all I got was a blank black screen. I waited a long time for it to do something, and all it did was restart itself to try again, but still nothing but black screen. I tried turning it off again manually, then on again, but it does the same thing. The blue power lights tell me it's on, but the screen doesn't show anything. I even tried putting in the system recovery disks that came with the computer to see if it would boot from those, but it just made funny noises trying to read the disks, then went back to doing nothing and restarted itself again. I've pushed f8 during the boot to see if I could get some options, but nothing. And today it's restarting itself much sooner than it was a few days ago. Can anyone help me? Do I need a new hard drive or a new computer? It's an HP Compaq Laptop with Vista, purchased in February 2007 and my warranty is up

Take the battery off, wait a sec and hold down the power button for about 6 secs. Put the battery back on and turn it on again . See if that changes anything.
I took out the battery and tried that, but no difference. :( Thanks for trying - any other thoughts? It only stays on for about 30 seconds before it restarts itself, and still totally black screen.
I read some forums on other people with your model having this problem. If possible hook up an external monitor and see if you get a display. Also try fn-f4 to toggle the display. Other people have had this problem and found it was a loose internal wire.
I tried this with a monitor that I know works with other laptops, but nothing happened...I pushed a series of Fn-F# commands and it was still blank. My computer won't stay on for more than 25 seconds or so before it restarts itself, which made it hard to try. I may just have to bring it in to have some one look at it...but I thought I'd try to see if there was an easy fix instead of a hardware problem :-/. Any other suggestions are more than welcome!!
With the constant restarting, it sounds like a heat issue.

As for the black screen...that could have something to do with heat, but it could also be like chrismichael said...loose wire.

If you are stil in warranty, I would call tech support. If you are not in warranty, see if there is a recall on your model since it seems like a bunch of people besides you are having the same type of issue.
Thank you for this suggestion, apparently many HP models like mine were experiencing similar problems, and they are offering an extended warranty program where they fix it for free, even if it's out of warranty! So it's all set now - thanks so much :)
