When I start the computer, the screen shows with a black band abt. 2.5 cm wide covering the L/H side. There is nothing missing, the view area is just reduced by this band. I have had this for 2 or 3 days now. It may be connected with Irfan View which I was using just before. Any help appreciated. Win98SE.

Are you sure someone hasn't messed with the monitor controls like maybe a child ,assuming you have a child with access to the PC.

grandchildren may well have been fiddling with it, but how do I go about getting full screen back?

Well every monitor i have seen has about four buttons on the front of it to adjust the screen to fit demensions of your screen. Just have to fiddle with them.
