modem translates analog signals to digital signals for the computer: MOdulate/DEModulate.

A router is just that; it routes packets along to their destination.

Are you connected to a router in your setup? Also be a bit more specific, as I am unsure what you mean by you need to click a site to connect. That means that you are already connected.

so how do you know it's not connected? Have you tried pinging something, or checking your email?

I'm connected 24/7, and I have to wait while it connects too. It's not connected to the server every second; not enough bandwidth.

ping stands for packet intnernet groper. Go to start > run > cmd > enter > type 'ping www.yahoo.com' without the quotation marks. If you get a response, you are connected.
